Sigma 80-400mm 1:4.5 -5.6 APO

Hi all have a chance to purchase the above lens and would like to know if any of you use it and how did you find it for taking nature/bird shots etc
I know it is heavy but my tripod can cope with that.

I have a copy of this lens on my Canon 1000d but not really used it for bird shots. This thread may be of use

I see it is an old lens and newer version is the Sigma-EX-120-400-mm-F-4 I will maybe do a bit more research on both and make sure they will fit a canon 550d
