Sigma DP1x

So, as always I was browsing the internet suffering from chronic GAS and spotted this little beauty at a price of £199, new, with a 2 year warranty. I've always been interested in the sigma dp's and have been looking at getting a compact for a while.

Is this a reasonable price or I have been looking at more expensive things all night and 200 quid sounds cheap in comparison? Does anyone have/ have had this camera or any of the DP's?

I have a DP1 (original) and also a DP2 Merrill. Clearly the Merrill is way better in lots of areas, but even the original DP1 is a very interesting camera. It's slow to use, gets through batteries very rapidly and is rubbish for video, but the photos are exceptional. There's something very special about the quality of photos that no other camera does, especially if you take the time to shoot raw and process them yourself (although again the Sigma software is slow and clunky). £199 sounds about the going rate for the DP1x - you could probably get an original DP1 for a bit less (£120 to £150), but the improvements on the x are worth the extra money.

Yeah some of the photos taken with this camera are astonishing, it seems to be especially suited to taking pictures of cityscapes at night which is the sort of photography i love. I think i'll be getting one next payday.

I'm afraid not...

I have decided that I'm going to save a little while longer and get a rx100 as its more versatile and a less niche product. I'm still interested in getting a top quality compact for street photography in the future and i'm sure i'll either go for a sigma merrill or a ricoh gr but I'm looking to get a decent compact for those times i dont want to lug my dslr around.

Thanks for replying I also had a Sony rx100and a Fuji x100,iam drawn to the sigma but like yourself I maybe getting the Ricoh GR as well seems it may just fit in with what I want. I don't always want to lug the dslr around especially when in London.

The Ricoh GR looks like a great camera for when you don't want the DSLR weight and bulk. The Sigma DPM range image quality looks the absolute business, but the poor RAW software put me off.

Yeah, at the moment I just want a no-hassle compact for taking on night outs and festivals etc for now but in the future want a quality compact for times when i want to be discreet and quiet.

If you are still interested in a DP1x, there's one for sale in the DPReview For Sale forum at the moment. £165. Not mine btw. Btw, you don't need to use Sigma's clunky software for the DP1x raw files, Lightroom handles them fine. Unfortunately this isn't the case for the Sigma Merrill cameras. I had a DP2M which was was capable of truly stunning results but the raw workflow - Sigma Photo Pro > huge tiff > Lightroom put me off. Also the battery life is horrendous.
