Looking at a couple of 24-70 used Sigma Lenses around £250 mark.

Question would I notice a difference in my images using EX or is it just the build.
For use with Canon 550d

EX is their designation for their top of the range lenses and IIRC they come with an extra couple of years of warranty. That would suggest to me that they're possibly built to a higher standard than their "bog standard" ranges. The DG mentioned in the thread title is a reference to the fact that the lenses so marked are suitable for use on full frame digital and 35mm film bodies, while DC indicates that the lenses are only suitable for APS-C (or smaller) sensors.

I've recently sold a Sigma 24-70 EX DG HSM so I could get a Canon 24-70 f2.8L II. The HSM version is newer and, according to a lot of reviews, is sharper too. The other version is the EX DG macro which is non HSM and a fair bit older. If one of the lenses is the HSM version I'd go for that if I was you, but if they're both the older macro models it might just be that whoever listed the lens hasn't put the full name in the listing. Have a look here http://www.sigma-imaging-uk.com/lens/standard-lens/24-70mm-f28-if-ex-dg-hsm for more info, you might also find the info for the macro version somewhere (maybe in the archived lenses section if you can find one).

My 24-70 HSM was a good lens for the price and was very sharp in the centre between 24-50 but softened between 50-70 at f2.8 but by the time it was stopped down to f4 it was very good all the way through. I usually shot groups of people rather than single person portraits so I rarely shot at f2.8 anyway so I had no problems. The lens was well built though and never gave me a moments problem and I shot a couple of weddings with it last year.

Very helpful!
Thanks to you both :)

Nether lenses had HSM so I have decided to wait until I see one with it.

That was a super link, full of info .
