Sigma f1.4 50mm

It's lovely, go on to Flickr and look it up, there are 1000's of examples
 
Cheers, just deliberating over the cost with a DX format camera. I know it'll drop straight on to FX.
 
It's an excellent lens. Very sharp with excellent colour rendition. Bokeh is amazing as well. It's not the smallest or lightest 50mm lens out there and it takes 77mm filters, so if size is an issue you might want to go somewhere else otherwise you will love it
 
I chose it over Canons offering and I'm glad I did.

Solidly built, pretty fast AF, lovely bokeh and a good price.

Nikon 50/1.8G and 1.4G are very hard to beat. Sigma may be better than canon (only wide open though) provided you get a good working copy
 
Yeah but I don't want Kai making my mind up. He is Nikon bias and Bokeh mental!!! I'd rather chat about it on here at least you get it straight.
 
Does anyone use one on a 7d? If so how do you find it?
 
The biggest issue when i was deciding was the risk of getting a 'bad' copy!
So i bought from a UK supplier so i could send it back if it was bad, plus you get Sigmas 3 Yr warranty (but you probably know this!)
I needn't have worried, got a lovely sharp copy, and i love it!
Definately one of my favourite lenses.

I've never put much faith in internet tales of Sigma trouble. I've bought all but one of my lenses from UK dealers and I've never had any issues with front/back focusing.
 
The problem is people start pixel peeping at F1.4 and the depth of field is ludicrously shallow.
A common theme to the focusing complaints is back focusing on near subjects but front focusing near infinity, exacerbated by micro adjusting for the near subjects.
If you micro-adjust for something in the middle then use f2 rather than 1.4 'because you can' it is a delight to use.
If something is focus critical use manual and live view.
It is worth it, the lens is very nice.
 
The focus issue is something that I've never suffered. Some people on forums want to hit perfect focus that'll stand 200% inspection on screen 100% of the time and in reality that is just not going to happen with any lens and camera combination. Canon themselves say on their own website that if you take three pictures you'll see focus differences between them and that this is perfectly normal. Add moving subjects, moving camera/shooter, wide apertures and peoples reluctance to accept that technique is a part of it including what you attempt to focus on and you get endless on line Chinese whispers and people who've never used the kit in question pontificating with authority.

I'm sure that back engineering lenses without the camera makes help isn't ideal but I'm also sure that the issue isn't quite as bad as the more extreme internet views would have us believe.
 
I suppose it's a matter for debate, different lenses different idiosyncrasy with each manufacturer. Just because a body maker makes good bodies is not a reason just to stick with that only option...unless you're a Sony fan!

And what's wrong with Sony eh? :naughty:

I've got the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 - it's a decent lens, as primes go anyway. No idea what it's like on a cropped sensor but on a full frame camera it can give some pleasing results.
 
It's a very good lens indeed on my 40D. I tried three copies before I found one that matched the body as it doesn't have micro-adjust. I've previously used Canon's 50/1.4 on the 40D and Nikon's 50/1.4 on a D300s and the Sigma seems better all round but it is much bigger.

Te-he just being mischievous... very interesting what the others are saying about micro adjustment. Wonder how this is compensated.
