i`m looking to buy a lens for shooting jets.which is more suitable,a sigma 120-400mm lens or the sigma 150-500mm.these are the only two i can really afford and obviously the 400mm is slightly cheaper but the 500 has alonger range.would i benefit from the longer range though even though the lens is heavier.

any information would be appreciated.

The 120/400 is slightly faster lens so would cope a little bit better with poorer light plus its a bit cheaper
I have the 150/500 and find it OK in good light . The focussing is slower than my 70/200 but once it locks on it's fine.
Probably not the answer you were looking for but you should be OK with either.

For better light handling 120/400
For the extra reach 150/500
The choice is yours:bonk::bonk:

Rob,

I have the Sigma 120-400. I orignally bought it for a safari last year. However I am going to Bournemouth Air Show this year and planning on using it there too.

My personal opinion is that the lens performs well, produces some very good pictures and is well worth the money. It is also alot less (price wise) in comparison to the Canon equivalent.

When I decided to buy the 120-400 I was also considering the 150-500. I decided that the extra reach was not really worth the extra money.

All depends how close you are to the jets. I had a Sigma 150-500 but found it too slow to focus so got rid and replaced with a Canon 70-200 IS F2.8 with a 1.4x TC. That's still only 280mm on my cropped 50D but I love it. Super fast focusing and have used it to shoot jets in the Mach Loop so far with no problem.

thanks guys.have you been up to the loop recently gareth?

Hi Rob - Only just realised it was you!!:D:D

Only been up once since we met that time, but off one day early next week. There's not been much happening I don't think, although a couple of harriers made an appearance on Monday. Maybe it'll pick up again soon. :shrug:

How about you?

i went up to cad west a few weeks ago.i`ve sold the sony because i bought a canon 20d from a photographer i did some work for.paid 30 quid for it and really pleased with it.i`m looking at upgrading later on when the new canon 60d comes out and the 50 drops.so at the moment i`m lens less lol.i`ve bid on a few sigma`s on ebay but i`m unsure what i would be better off with,the 400mm or the 500m.
