Hi. Im trying to decide between tge sigma 105mm and 150mm macro lenses, both non os. Has anyone got any experience as to which might be best? Tge reviews all make me think to 150?
The 105 is lighter and with shorter focal length makes it easier to handhold.
The 150 has HSM so doesn't extend, is silent focussing and has full time manual focus (the lens can be manually focussed in any mode) and a longer working distance (useful for skittish things like butterflies).
Image quality wise I doubt there is anything to tell them apart.
Ive had both (curently have two 150's one for sale in classifeds!)
The 150 is much better I feel. easier to work with, non extending, and just feels like a better made lens. Yes its heavier, but most of my macro work is on a tripod.
Match it with a 1.4TC and you get even more from it.
I did not know which on to go for, sigma 105 /150, tamron 90 or canon100, In the end I went for the sigma 150, a good move, very pleased with it, but I did have problems getting one as the new 150 OS as replaced it, at allot more money
Just a side note, the sigma 180mm f/3.5 macro was discontinued a while back due to the 150mm being much more popular and now goes very cheaply used for what it is (I've seen them go ~£100 less that used 150mm's. If you're looking for a long macro lens for more tripod based use (the 180mm is really pushing the limits of what can be handheld for macro), it's well worth looking into.
It doesn't get mentioned that often but it does a dang up job of competing with the likes of the canon 180L and nikkor 200/4 for a fraction of the cost.
