Silly question but needs to be asked

Im struggling to adjust or understand the shutter speed on my d40

am i correct in thinking that you adjust it only by moving the command dial either right or left?

it doesnt seem responsive when i do this and im struggling to understand the numbers that appear.

i apologise if this is :bonk:

What have you got the camera mode set to?
A S M P or another mode?

What mode is the top dial in ? If it is in Auto, it will be un-responsive.

In A it will adjust the aperture, but as you look through the viewfinder both sets of numbers will change, shutter speed is the number to the left.

In S it will adjust the shutter speed.

In M it adjusts the shutter speed, unless you press the exposure +/- button at the same time as moving the dial, this adjusts the aperture.
