Silly question UV filters

I have recently purchased a nikon 50mm 1.4 and want to get some sort of filter for it, primarily to stop my daughter touching the glass.

Would I be ok with the cheap ones off ebay?

Some people swear by them, other hate them.

Yes you can use one, but get the best quality one you can. All that lovely expensive glass inside the lens will be useless if you cover it up with cheap bit of plastic.
 
Get a decent one and it will be fine, Hoya HD for instance.

Or get the hood. It's quite deep so it would take your daughter much more effort to put her fingers on the glass.

I use a Hoya HD UV filter for my wide angle lens, because the hood is so shallow it realistically doesn't offer much protection, but on my 85 the hood is deep enough that I don't use a filter.
 
Borrow one and see what effect it has on the output of your camera.

I did some fairly exhaustive trials on a new Sigma lens to compare it with my existing Nikon. I was surprised at how much better the Sigma appeared, UNTIL I removed the UV filter (Hoya) from the Nikon lens. The UV filter put a distinct "milky" cast on the photographs.

I have used UV filters for donkey's years - no more !
 
Gloves or mittens for your daughter are cheaper (and don't affect IQ) !

She is nearly 3 and nothing works with her!

However I prefer the idea of the hood but am confused what works best with 50mm 1.4.
 
Get the lens hood instead. This is the only lens of mine (Canon brand) that deliberately didn't get a UV. It can cope with stray lights and low contrast scenes without one, while the hood gives it enough protection for most sensible environments.
