I'm going to the F1 for practice day and I don't have a media pass. I haven't been recently and was wondering if my Nikon 70-300mm be enough or should I hire something longer? I was hoping to buy a Sigma 150-500mm and take that, but money is a bit tight at the moment. I have heard that there is a lot more fencing now, so would hiring a lens be a waste of money?

Also, would anyone know any good places to go to around the circuit? I don't want to be in the same place all day and was planning on walking around as much as possible to get different angles.

Silverstone is a bit naff from supporter areas generally. In regard to lenses, the longer the better. With a 70-300 you'll be at 300mm most of the time and wishing you had more unless you want to pan through fences all day - If you plan shooting through the fences you'll need to do so at the widest possible aperture and risk losing a bit of IQ, so the faster the lens the better.

Luffield is one of the best spots IMO and one of the few places you can get over the fencing without being in a stand, but you really need 400mm or more.

Thanks for your reply. I do apologise for the late response, I’ve had some computer issues recently and have been unable to get on. I really appreciate the advice, thanks.

I think I’ll try and have a walk around the circuit to find a good spot with what I've got. Things should be more quiet on practice day, hopefully.
