Simple Compact (For my mum.....)

So my Mum's been hinting about a new camera for Xmas, she's currently using an old Fuji something or other, but she want's something newer, and with half decent quality. Mainly for pics of the grandkids etc.

I'm not too up to date on compacts, but I need something simple (she's not great with tech), ideally I don't want to spend over £100 (she will drop it, its not a matter of if but when.....)

Does anyone have any specific models etc that they would recommend, or will any of the newer compacts be pretty much the same?

Or I could just stick a 1DX on the credit card, and if she found that too complicated then I suppose I could take it off her hands......

I'd get the best IXUS you can afford, I've used this approach for buying cameras for several women and also recommended it to others. There is something about the ease of use, style and output of Canon's little compacts that just seems to fit this market perfectly.

I'd recommend a Panasonic Lumix type - the AI mode generally gets it right, and the image stabilisation is very very good. Bought a TZ10 for my wife a couple of years back, and she has been really pleased with the results, seldom getting a failed shot.

I got my Mum a Panasonic Lumix thing a few years ago for about £100 and it was really good. She hasn't broken it yet and the dog hasn't managed to breech it's defences.

I'm sure there must be some relatively inexpensive "rugged" compacts about and since you say it's a matter of when rather than if she drops it, she could probably do with one that isn't going to disintegrate when she does!

Or Sony, when I look at the cameras being used by my mum's generation it's Canon and Sony that dominate. There's a lot of Fuji, etc. being carried, but talking about them usually generates a list of why it's not quite right.
