Simple free mp4 video editor?

With my garden trailcam I have a need to do some editing of the short (30secs-2mins) mp4 video clips.
It's nothing complicated, just cut off/out areas of inaction, join clips and a simple transition (dissolve or similar).
I downloaded Videopad Free from the Windows Store, only it isn't free, it's a 30-day trial then £80+ to buy ... I didn't/won't use a fraction of its features so don't really want to spend that sort of money on it.
Some of the others I have trialled are so complex that I could run a film studio on it ... if I could understand it!
Is there a simple free or cheap editor out there that could allow me to do this simple sort of editing without going back to college?

Windows 10 laptop.

QuickTime on Mac allows for mp4 splicing and joining I’m sure. You can definitely easily trim

Thanks Gil, I'm a Win 10 user though (post edited). :)

Serif Movieplus X6 powerful yet really easy to use it's now available as a free download. The universal Registration key is 881887

Any useable link to a download, it's like finding a needle in a haystack! :)

You could try Adobe Rush. It's supposedly a free cut down version of Premier Pro.

GoPro Studio was a good easy and free one and will deal with any video not just from GoPro.
Officially discontinued but you can still download it e.g. here https://www.techspot.com/downloads/6759-gopro-studio.html

Thanks all, I'll check them out. :)

I think the forum remembers!

I had a similar problem, in that I wanted to edit videos, but on a very casual basis, as I prefer photos rather than videos, - and I don't want to spend time learning new software etc.
I searched for reviews, plus , it had to be free software and selected OpenShot Video editor.
Here's the link .....

Just what I needed ! You should try it.
Tip: Find a few tips on YouTube and make it easier.

Stupid question: "Why would they want to put out FREE software?" Is it to access data on your computer? I'm just suspicious of anything like this.
