Say you have a shot with the subject in focus and the background out of focus.

When you sharpen would you apply the sharpening to the whole frame or just the subject.

The sharpening would apply to the whole frame. However, in applications like Photoshop you can select part of the image and then apply the sharpening setting to only what you have selected. Or, you can apply sharpening to the whole image and then use layer masks to remove the sharpening effect from certain parts of the photo.

If you do apply it to the whole image you'll be increasing the overall noise so it's better to find some way of applying sharpening selectively. I created a photoshop action to select just the edges in an image then apply the sharpening just to those edges, works well for me. I also created an action that does the reverse for noise reduction.

Lab sharpening works for me. I then creat a layer mask and paint out the areas I don't want the sharpening. I also do the same the other way around with noise reduction.
