I'm looking for a Tamron 24-70 VC and Simply Electronic have the best price I've found (£548).

£251 is a chunk of saving so I guess these are greys.

I can get extended warranty for £35.

Is Simply worth dealing with?
Are grey Tamrons to iffy?
 
Just type the name into the search box. General consensus appears to be not to touch with a barge pole.
 
Read quite a few reviews on the 'net & tbh I wouldn't touch em.

if you can afford to lose the money go for it - if not, perhaps better to look elsewhere.
 
I've never lost money from a dodgy supplier yet. Consumer credit act 1974 (S75), The Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000, Sales of Goods Act (S14) and too much time on my hand are all bad for suppliers.

I thought they were dodgy reading their T&Cs which misrepresent 2 of the above protection.

If all else fails, waking in the middle of the night and finding me sitting quietly in the owners bedroom focuses their attention :)
 
thing is consumer credit protection etc is good for dealing with a recalcitrant retailer - its less good for dealing with a con ( I'm not saying simply are conmen but their website and reviews tends to suggest they might be)

on the whole I wouldn't waste your time - if you aren't concerned about buying grey you are better off with a known quantity like panamoz , digital rev, or hdew
 
quite - my point was even buying grey there are those with decent reputations and those who's rep is less favourable
 
I had a Olympus E-PL1 from them in 2010 and i never had any problems with them even when it developed a fault of blacking out when the shutter was pressed after 3 months of owning it they sorted the repair out, Took about 6 weeks which seemed like forever at the time ! :eek:
That was the last time i have dealt with them and it was a okay experience with them overall.
 
Panamoz have that lens for £574 though is currently out of stock. They have a much better reputation - a little more than you have seen but I know where I'd go. Could ask when they are expecting stock.

I have brought various kit from Simply Electronics over the last few years (last purchase was my Canon 5D mk3) and to be 100% honest I have NEVER had a problem with them, my only minor niggle is their delivery estimation is a bit slack but they do come good albeit a few days late
 
FWIW, I've never used Simply but I did my own research a while back and was pretty put off by the reports. That's just me though.

Also, don't Tamron have some slightly iffy QC issues on some of their lenses? Certainly a couple of Pentax-mount lenses by them which I was looking at previously had serious calibration issues on some reports (one was the 17-50 f/2.8 can't remember the other). That would put me off a grey import.
 
There's not going to be any value in this thread, is there? If you read up, you'll find a fair bit of evidence that suggests it might be a bad idea. On the other hand, you might save some money. I.e. risk/reward. Your choice on how much risk you want to take...

A bit difficult to quote UK consumer law, and a bit expensive to make the trip to sit in someone's bedroom, when they are in Hong Kong...

Maybe, maybe not. If there is net-net more information than disinformation in this thread then it ought to be helpful. What one then does with that information is up to the individual, of course...

I'd much rather go into a decision knowing the potential pitfalls vs upside, than thinking after the event "I wish someone had told me this" or being in blissful ignorance that I was a bit fortunate. As you say though - it's about risk vs reward.

I just bought a monitor on fleabay. Brand new but apparently "bankrupt stock" from a UK seller with a very good rating. Could be stolen, could be broken, could fail 6 months in and not have a valid UK guarantee. I don't know, but I was willing to take the gamble. Fingers crossed...
