For some reason I'd thought the Murdoch empire had acquired several titles, but maybe I have that wrong?

I think they have Sun, Times and Sunday Times. The Times was reasonable until the last few years, when it was infested with columnists like Melanie Phillips, who would be more at home in the Express.

...you can set up record for specific shows but it feels like a chore

We're the opposite and very seldom watch live broadcast TV.

We use Freeview, choosing the things we think we'll like up to a week ahead. If a choice turns out to be wrong for us, we just delete and go on to the next thing.
