Site navigation, two questions.

Hi all, I am currently in the process of redesigning my blog to make it a) a little nicer to look at and b) better laid out for visitors to find things.

So here are my questions:

1) I am toying with the idea of dropping the typical Categories list on the side of the page that blogs usually use, and replacing that with a Categories drop down at the top of the page to give it a cleaner feel. I'm so used to having the list though that the page almost looks bare without it, and will require visitors having to 'find' the drop down list (not that it will be hidden, but I'm so used to it just being there on the page now it seems weird to not have it there).

So do I go with a new drop down menu system or keep the static (but cluutered?) list that is the norm?

If I go with a drop down, it means I can play about with the page navigation a little more and that leads to this question...

2) What makes for a better browsing experience, an 'Article Categories' list that when you mouse over, drops down to reveal the blog categories. You then click on one (say equipment reviews) to then be taken to a typical blog page that has all entries in that category displayed and you have to scroll down a long page to see what's in there, or scroll through multiple pages if the blog is set to only show several entries per page.

OR

When you click on equipment reviews, you are taken to one short page that just has quick a list of all equipment reviews, with links so you can jump straight to what you want from there.

I kind of like the first typical approach in that one click gets you in to the equipment reviews section but all that searching around to see what is in there could get boring very quickly if you have no clue what is actually there. Which is where the second option is good, although it's an extra click it at least presents you with a full list of what is there so you can see at a glance if there is anything of use.

I'm kinda split 50/50 so thought I'd ask you good people what you think :)

TBH I'm more a fan of having everything on the page, I certainly prefer to see the first bit of a post to see if it worth reading...

Yeah I know what you mean, it's nice to see everything. The only trouble is, potentially some sections could end up with a LOT of posts and I only like to have 6 or 7 entries per page. So stuff that's burried on page 8 or 9 may never get a look in which was were the quick list of items reviewed seemed the solution. This would potentially only be applied to the equipment review section, not ALL sections.

I'll have a play and see how it works best...
