Hi,

can someone advise me on softboxes and the relevance of their sizes?

The larger the lightsource (when viewed from the subject) the softer the light. So for the softest light, you want a big softbox, nice and close to the subject.
 
yes. generally, the bigger the better.

I'd recommend getting a folding octobox rather than a 'standard' one, the normal ones are a pain in the arse to put up...
 
Yes pretty much bigger the better. I really love octo softboxes as they give the model a nice round catch light in their eyes.
