Skiing - Panasonic G3 or Canon G10

Hi all,

I'm going on a family Ski trip in a few weeks and was wondering which caper to take. I'm no expert and will not doubt hit the deck a few times and was trying to decide which camera to take. Last year I took the G10 and got some nice pics plus it was easy to carry in my pocket. I've not got a Panasonic G3 and when fitted with the 14mm or 20mm Pancake it is also quite small and would maybe fit in my pocket..

Do you think a single prime would be okay out on the mountains for family shots and some mountain landscapes? I feel the 14mm might be enough for the day time and a 20mm for evenings? Or should I just stick with the versatile Canon G10 and compromise on my evening low light shots?

Any advice?

I'd go with the Canon, simply because of the zoom..... just allows a bit more flexibility in recording some nice memories.

I usually take my D2x and a few lenses in my Burton pack but this year I just couldn't be bothered; I'd not been snowboarding for three years and aside from thinking a bit of shakiness on the board could end up with smashed camera gear, I just wanted to enjoy the holiday a bit more without all the stopping and picture taking. You have the right idea with a very lightweight set-up.

BTW, where are you going? I went to L2A and although it was great fun, too much sun and not enough rain meant everything was tracked out when we got there, and either a bit slushy or a bit crusty. Hope you have a great time :)

Lots of people are using a GoPro camera now for action sports? tiny bit priccy though
 
Canon over the Pannie any day of the week for skiing (if you are carrying it on you). It's far more robust.

However neither are exactly massive, so I'd take the G3 with the 20/1.7 for evenings/nightlife as well.

WE stayed in a 40 persona chalet the other week and I'd hazard a guess that 20 of the guests all had GoPros. Two guys even spent two days off the hill editing footage - crazy!!

Couldn't believe the number of folk on the lifts who had them - even saw a guy with some kind of gyroscopic arm attached to his helmet with a GoPro attached so it tracked his head as he moved, rotating around him. Strange.

A mate at work has just bought a HD2 to record his fishing; really looking forward to having a play in the 120fps mode :)
 
Thanks chaps. Looks like both then! Canon for the day and Panny with 20mm for the night. I am off to La Thuile and can't wait!

The G10 also has a built in ND filter for those super sun + snow moments when you want to open up the aperture a bit. Not that you'll get a very thin DoF but at least you can get the background out of focus.
 
Another vote for taking a compact!
 
With compacts you are probably going to get the advantage of it being "compact" :D and you'll probably get a good zoom range too but you may have a limited aperture range and arguably relatively poor IQ.

I have an LX5 which is regarded as being one of the better top end compacts but it's easily beaten by my GF1+20mm f1.7 so the last three times I've been abroad I've taken both :D I've used the GF1 for quality and low light and the LX5 when zoom was more important. If I could for some reason only take one it'd be the GF1. Although these days you can get a compact zoom so a GF1 be about the same size as one of the larger all in one quality compacts.

Took my G1 and TZ7 boarding in Japan a couple weeks ago. Had the G1 with 14-45 in my bag but only took a couple of shots as it's a faff stopping and fishing it out. TZ7 lived in a front pocket and got used loads. Zoom is handy as you can just zip down ahead of someone and snap 'action' shots without having to set up a shot properly.

Snowboarding in Japan! I'm jealous, I'd love to snowboard there, I've been trying to line it up for the last 4 years, but it's never worked out.

Was the powder as legendary as all the magazines make out?
 
If I had room in my bag, I will take both! Otherwise Canon!

Yes it's amazing, all the more seasoned Euro / Canadian guys with us said it was the best snow they'd seen. I was content as a relative newbie to float down the mountin like on a hoverboard and land on a big fluffy pillow when I stacked it.
:) I'd definitely reccomend getting there sometime. Nice and quiet too, especially at night when half the time you're the only one on the run.
 
Well as an update, I've received a nice pressie on a Fuji X10 compact. It's a little bigger than the G10 and not so pocketable due to the non fully retracted lens, but it will fit my pocket on the ski jacket and is made from a robust metal so my plan is to take only the Fuji and see how well the funky sensor gets on with "Pro Low Light" mode on an evening!
