I bought one of these £180 packages a few years ago which gives me Sky+ without paying a monthly subscription etc.
I have now just bought a 2nd hand HD box to try and upgrade to HD and the simplist set up instructions shows:
1. a mains connection.
2. a HDMI connection.
3 a connection into input dish 1 and input dish 2.

With my current set up I only have one input core from the dish which I have tried into input dish 1 but get no signal.
Does this mean that I would be unable to receive HD on this set because the wiring from the dish is not dual core.

interesting, youll need 2 feeds from the dish for sky+ to work correctly (i.e. watch and record separate channels) and if i remember rightly HD also needs 2 feeds.

im not sure the older dishes support HD either?
 
Thanks Scott....and Neil I only have one feed from the dish and get Sky+ OK with watch and record on seperate channels ??
I'm now thinking that the set up may be an 'older' version which will not be ugradeable to HD

Each core of a satellite cable (i.e. a coaxial cable) allows you to watch one thing (technically a mux containing a number of channels). To watch and record 2 different things you need 2 cables and a satellite dish with a twin LNB. Not sure if Sky+ allows you to record something from the same tuner whilst you watch something else. Whilst it is technically possible, it becomes a nightmare in software and giving a consistent UI to users). If you only have a single satellite cable, you can watch or record one SD or one HD channel. The distinction for HD and SD is at the box end, not the antenna/feed end.

Satellite is like this as, unlike terrestrial, the box controls the electronics at the dish so you have to have a dedicated feed for each tuner.
 
Scott -I'm pretty sure we can watch one channel and tape another.

i will have a look tom and dissconect one of mine and see what it does.
just undone both cables from my sky hd box then pluged one in on left side(as you look the sky box from from the back) and it works, i can watch one cjhannel and record that but if i turn over it cuts of the recording. if iplug it in the right side(as you look the sky box from from the back) it does nothing, so it has to be in the back left, now if that doesnt work (the cable is fine) so must be the dish(what dish have you got)
now if it does work then you can buy one of these

and make a little link cable to go to the other tunner.
thinking about the link think i dont know if it would work but cheap enough to try.

If I remember rightly, in the engineers menu hidden within SOME sky plus boxes you can set sky plus to operate from one cable. It is used for blocks of flats etc where there was only one feed. You can only record one channel at once but you can watch something already recorded/anytime whilst it records.

I think the only difference is lack of signal errors with the set expecting dual connections.

Have you only one connection??

If so why not buy a quad LNB for under £10 from ebay (plus the correct sky cable and F plugs) and replace your current LNB (They just clip on). If you are careful you will not put the dish out of alignment. You can then connect both boxes with 2 cables each!

If you do this, don't confuse a quattro LNB as the same thing as a quad LNB. They are two entirely different things, although they do each have 4 cables running to them.

Are you expecting to tell sky you'd like to upgrade, and pay £10/month? Or are many of the HD channels free, so you only pay £10/month for certain HD channels?
