Skylight Filter

Hi,

I take care of my lenses etc to a point that i clean the glass after every use so protection isnt an issue for me.

But ... i had a skylight filter with the kit when i bought it and took it off.

What do they do and do they make the picture better?

If i took a shot with one on and then without would there be any iq loss with the filter on?

"Skylight filter.

A filter which absorbs ultraviolet radiation and which is also usually tinted light pink or yellow in order to cut back on some of the blueness in an image caused by skylight. A type of warming filter."

I believe digital cameras are not susceptible to UV, so the primary purpose of a skylight would be to protect the lens. It depends on the quality of the filter whether it would affect image quality.

Why not try taking a photo with and without and see if you can tell the difference?

Either a skylight or UV filter can be used to protect the lens, but ultraviolet is only of concern to us film users when shooting at high altitudes.

As 'f1charlie' says, depends on the quality. If you have a top quality lens you should match it with an equally good filter, eg. B+W.
