slide and negative scanning

As a newbie, I am not sure if I am posting in the correct section so please move if necessary.
In common with many people, I have a collection of old negatives (stored correctly and they should be in decent condition). I would like to digitise these for a family member and have looked on Amazon for a scanner.
However, I am a little confused because several of them have poor reviews and I don't want to waste my money if the process is not going to give good results.
A photographer that I know has said that it might be cheaper and have better results to let a professional do the job.
Please is there anyone who might be able to advise on this?
Obviously I don't want to spend an awful lot of money on a scanner as I already have one that is adequate for my needs but will not scan negatives.

I've recently used Onevision imaging in Coventry to scan some slides for me. I know they do complete archive scanning, it might be worth looking at their price guide too see if it will be cheaper to get them to do it that to buy a scanner outright if ou aren't shooting film any more.

A lab will also clean the slides/negs too which is another important step so that you don't end up with a picture covered in dust etc...

Welcome btw, I didn't realise you were new to the forums.

Thank you for the welcome, reply and advice. I think that you are correct in that it is better to have them done by a specialist rather than buy expensive equipment which will be redundant after completion of the work (I gather that the cheaper scanners do an inferior job). Also, I can have them done gradually depending on the results.
I am sure that this is the best solution as I know that I am not capable of editing and doing very technical things if I did them myself and they weren't up to scratch.

it may depend on how many you need to have scanned .i should think its fairly expensive having them done for you ,,,look at something like the epson v500 , and then see what the price difference is going to be .

:agree:

Another option is to consider buying a reasonable negative scanner, scanning your negatives, and then selling the scanner.
