Think this is the best forum for it.........

OK - from about 1968 to about 2000 (ish) Dad had varying 35mm pentax's and as a result he has about a million and one 35mm slides.

Now he has finally got into the 21st Century (laptop and interweb!!! - lets just hope he doesn't reply to the god Fearing Nigerian Businessman who has $27m to deposit in his bank account), I thought it would be a nice birthday present to get him a digital photoframe preloaded with some of his slides.

What's the best way to covert slide to Digital? I could pay people to do it, but expensive. SEen some scanner things on ebay, which look rubbish and for £20 or so not expecting anything special.......... Jessops sell some kind of contraption for around £100 or so....... but to me thats expensive for what is essentially a 1 off exercise.

Anyone done this before? and how?

Thanks

Lynton.

P.S. Anyone got one of those Jessops (or other retailers) contraptions, they wouldn't mind lending out for a couple of weeks? :)

Not sure what the Jessop's contraption is but do you mean the slide duplicator that fits on to your camera in place of a lens? e.g. this item# on eBay: 230416076911

I got a Panagor one for £6 on eBay before Christmas and I have to say it did a really good job, producing some nice quality images except my cropped sensor (Nikon D60) wasn't able to see all of the (35mm) slide. You can zoom in but not out so unless your slide lends itself to being cropped it's a bit of a compromise.

Decent slide scanners are expensive and I was warned off the cheap ones available. I have seen some reputable duplication companies however, that provide a postal service for scanning at around 25p per slide.

If you want to try my Panagor thingy, PM me - I think I've got a Pentax T-adaptor for it too.

i got around 280 slides scanned at 2000 dpi fully cleaned and dust removed
around 30p a slide
i wouldnt have had the patience to do it all my self...
overall cost around £85 for a master and £5 for copies

Spuff - exactly what I meant - would love a go, if I may...... will drop you a PM.

There is a superb heavyweight slide copier called a BOWENS ILLUMITRAN - these appear in ebay every week or three. It is a copy rig that uses flash to illuminate the slide - there's bellows and usually an enlarger lens (which gives excellent results)

Buy one for £50 - £100.... use it to copy all the images onto your regular digital camera (the rig had interchangeable T2 mounts) - your dad would be able to use it - and once done sell it for what you bought it for....

Here's one

:)

that sounds like commercial success

Here's one on ebay

Looks like you'd need to add an enlarger lens - the best for this purpose was the 63mm Nikkor - but a 50mm componon or rodagon would both be excellent - and for little more than a low grade slide copier you have a real excellent but simple to use copier.

It might be a little dark to look through - as you used it manual focus and stopped down - but the system had an excellent variable exposure system that was a doddle to use - and when I looked for the info on this I found the instructions online first go...

......

I only had about 30 slides to do but I did enquire at my local high street Kodak franchise (you know, one of those little kiosk shops). The guy looked it up on a pukka list and said transfer to DVD/CD would be £4 per slide and then the usual printing costs if I wanted prints

Once they'd helped me up from the floor, I thanked them for the information and left.

:shake: do you have a bolt through your neck or a zip on the back

sounds like they never got any customers for that service

Well, they never got my custom but I suppose they don't need too many punters at that price for it to pay for itself!

I used a slide copier that fitted on the front of my G5 similar to this item on ebay 360224125430 it just fits on the front of the camera, is ever so quick.
Have a look at this pic here http://rides.webshots.com/photo/1134227493049001931HzuZRy
View it full size, thats a photo of a slide taken with a Canon G5.
Once set up (takes only a couple of mins) I reckon you could do a box of 36 slides in 3 mins.
My scanner takes longer than that to do one.
