My new lens arrived this morning, a 50mm 1.8 prime lens, it was only £62 which I think is brilliant value for money.

I mounted it on my d300s to look at it and try to suss it out, when I noticed an error message that says:

f EE, which indicates that I've mounted a lens that has an aperture ring? But I haven't set the lens to its smallest f/stop (usually f/22 or f/32) now it auto focus's so do I use the lens in manual or can I still use the lens in a or s mode, I'm slightly confused I know from reading on the forums that to zoom I move my body backwards and forwards, I don't have a problem there, I've also read these are really good portrait lenses as well, would you all agree with that statement?

With my 50mm f/1.4 AF-D I put the aperture ring into the smallest, and it works fine. It only plays up if I change the aperture manually.

With the "zoom" they means as it's a fixed focal length lens, you have to move closer to the subject to make it appear bigger or move away to make it smaller.
 
Put the lens aperture ring to F22 and lock it. You can now control the aperture via the camera scroll wheel as normal.

Your feet become the zoom, keeps you fit and alert.
