Hi,

I'm looking at tripods and seem to have narrowed it down to these two. My camera's a Nikon D90 and at the moment just the 18-55mm vr kit lens. I'll be using the tripod for landscapes and night shots.

So then does anyone have any experience of either of these? I always hear people rave on about redsnappers. But I know slik are big players in the tripod market too.

Also, I'm thinking about getting a 3 way pan head rather than a ball head, my thinking being that if I get a bigger lens in the future I don't wanna be struggling with a ball head. Is this wise? Should I just go for the ball head anyway?

I have a Slik Sprint Pro II ball head originally purchased for use with a Panasonic G1 and it was perfect, have been using it with a D7000 and its ok have had 1 or 2 issues with the camera moving when using it in portrait mode due to the quick release plate working loose on the camera body, love the concept of a ballhead but this one is not the best, on the plus side it folds down to 47cm, handy for strapping to a ruc sack. Certainly one of the better "budget" Tripods.

Ok cool. So the ball head is the weak point then? That's ok because I was probs gonna go for the pan head anyway.

So a plus one for the slik. Any more for any more?
 
I use a Redsnapper with a 7D with various L lenses and have never had a problem with the ball head.
 
+1 for the red snapper.

I have the ball head and 3 way head.

I've only just got the ball head, so can't really comment on the ball head, but the 3 way head is great.

The only problem with any 3 way head is if you want to swing it around in different axis you need to keep undoing and doing up different knobs. It did everything i need and if I was doing everything on the level it wouldn't be a problem, but switching to portrait was 1 knob, rotating was anothing knob and aiming up or down was another knob.

ball heads are easier in most cases logically and most people seem to say this, but I've yet to put to practice
 
Ok I'm swayed towards the red snapper now. It's on offer on their website so I think that'll be the one. Not too fussed about taking my time setting up and stuff, and I want it as rigid as possible so I think I'll go for the pan head.
