As title suggests.

I recently bought this lens off a selling page and went round and checked it out and all seemed ok. Picked it up today for a little portrait session and it takes an age to focus. I've flipped the distance switch and doesn't make a difference.

Changed batteries on camera, nothing.

Any idea what it could be? I feel it may have to have a service and abit of tlc.

It may not be the same issue, but I had a 135 f2 lens start to focus slowly, it got progressively worse. Sent to Canon (Elstree, great service in my experience) and it needed a new USM motor.

I've not had that problem with any of my L lenses, but if you bought it second had and the seller didn't show you and receipts for a service then I would get it looked at. As you said it might need a bit of tlc.

What camera body is it connected to. It should focus almost instantly, especially if the distnce between first and secon focus point is relatively close. From one end of the focus distance to the other takes more time obviously e.g .from from close up to infinity. If you're a member of CPS Elstree can service it in a couple of days.

It's paired with a 5d ii and once it hits focus it's ridiculously sharp and pleasing.

I may just ask for a quote at my local shop and see if they can advise.

I would send it straight to Canon Elstree and not let a local shop anywhere near it unless they were Canon authorised repair specialists.

as above, get them sent out to be seen, my 70-200 is appearing to have os issues, the system just stopped working halfway through a wedding on saturday so its over in stoke getting looked at now, maybe its just me but if something seems wrong then it potentially is.
