Slow lap top Help!!!!!!!!

Hi all i have a Sony Viao it has 500mb of RAM :gag:and is struggleing to perform:nuts: what should i do to speed up the lap top:thumbs:. i like it and want to keep it anyone help :)...

I have a C drive and a D drive. the C is all but filled how do i move my pictures over the the D drive which had 40GB of space left i have heard of partitioning but i think it is already partitioned how do i use it :bonk::bonk:

Can you give us the model number?

To move the photos, simply create a "Photos" folder in you D drive, and COPY the photos over - once you're happy they are copied OK, delete the ones on your C drive.

To make it faster? More RAM - depending on your laptop, it could take either 1 or 2GB of RAM max - need the model number to find out... It could also be just a slow processor, not much you can do about that I'm afraid. Defragging your hard disk may help a little, especially if it hasn't been done in a long time.

Hi and many thanks for your post the model number is PCG7A1M Sony Vaio its about 4 years old, its a celeron M processor 1.5ghz, 504 mb of ram. The lap top is bursting with slowness, i defrag, window wash, as well as clear the cash?:thinking: IPconfig /flushDNS thingy, sometimes it gets very hot and slow, the cpu shoots to 100%, once again thanks Alasdair

Also consider preventing un-wanted programmes from starting up
when you dont need them running.

Things like Msn,Itunes Helper etc.

They run in the background & sap performance.

Ram is a good place to start though :thumbs:
 
Buy an external HD, transfer everything to it then reformat your hard drive and re-install windows, it's the only way you'll ever get rid of all the crap, I bet it'll be spyware that's slowing it down,
 
Clearing out your temp folder will probably help speed things up a little
 
Ahh - Celeron M is a nice low-power laptop CPU, unfortunately it's not exactly a powerhouse when it comes to performance. More RAM would definitely help - it uses old-fashioned DDR (PC2700 SODIMMS) http://www.crucial.com/uk do 512MB sticks for around £17, which would take your laptop to it's maximum supported 1GB of memory.

At the end of the day though, it's just getting old...like the rest of us;)
 
hi and many thanks, ok i will start with reformatting taking off what i need, with the Sony you had to copy from the laptop as it came with no disc's i will put into action all of the replys once again many thanks

I'd agree that a memory upgrade would help. Depending on what applications you are running this coupled with not the fastest processor in the world may be the problem. Although you've got 512Mb of RAM windows is probably graping about 200Mb for its own uses
If you don't intend to replace it soon get a 1Gb memory module and replace one of the 256 modules with it.

Go to the Crucial web site and download their memory scanner. That'll give you the correct module for the machine
 
If you don't mind reformatting, you could always install a fresh copy of a stripped down version of XP.
There's versions of XP out there that run on about 17mb of RAM.
You would need an XP licence though, which it sounds like you already have.

What I do is have 2 partitions, C and D.
All my programs are on C drive, and all photos/music/videos is on D drive. Doing that helps keep the laptop running pretty fast for a while.
 
Start - Run - type 'msconfig' This will enable you to stop all the startup programs running at boot that you don't need, freeing up memory and cpu capacity!
 
Have you tried running a defrag?

I find that when I run one on mine performance gets better afterwards.
 
If you use norton/mcafee or zonealarm personally I would ditch them. We had machines running Norton AV, and ZA firewall.. I removed them and now use avast and xp built in firewall and people are much happier with the performance of their machines.
 
just a little pointer, if it is reporting 504 meg of ram, that means the shared graphics card is using 8 meg (it will have 512meg) once you have increased the ram., have a look in bios to see if you can increase the amount allocated to graphics, more graphics memmory may help a bit with graphic proggies.

Also, try and run a few programs like Adaware to remove any spy ware
 
just a quick update fitted a Patriot 1GB it's very quick ran a defrag, window washed, clean the drive and put the cat out :gag:... the memory was split into two 256 cards so replaced one, the option is to replace the other later or put a 512 in or another 1 GB many thanks



Ps i am having trouble Betty:lol: me being thick:) how do i copy and paste over onto the D drive, been racking my brain cell, is there a simple answer.

when you drag the files from C:\pictures to D:\pictures (or whatever you called them)
hold down the SHIFT key (because you want to shift them not copy them!)
works a treat
 
all of the above is good advice, alsoe try clearing out any windows temporary folders, these can take up huge amount of disk space. Also if you are that tight for disk space try reducing the size of the recycle bin.
 
I dont know anybody that likes norton, it causes nightmares with your speed
 
Goooood-morning talk photography.

well followed instructions and moved all my Pictures over to D drive :thumbs: the lap top has had a good clean

Msconfig custom start up 35 secs
got rid of useless programs
installed a 1 GB memory card
ran window wash
defragged the drive
moved pictures to D drive
cleand C disc

woooohshhhhhhhhhhhhh>>> very happy

I think everyone covered it all, but 1 last thing do you really need windows?
Would linux be a good option?
Not such a worry about thouse nasty virusesssessss thing a majigy what nots.
