Small but good tripod recommendations?

Bit of a lazy request, I have searched around a bit but it's hard to get an idea of how good a tripod will perform by looking at a photograph.

I need a tripod for stills, my main requirements are stability in wind, and ease/quickness to set up, so twist grip rather than tab lever things would be good.

However, I will be traveling with it, so the folded length needs to be about 50cm to fit in my bag, and I would like to spend about £50.

Been looking at http://www.redsnapperuk.com/camera-accessories/RS-284_and_RSH-24_3-way_head_.html but don't know if its actually good or not. I know I'm not gonna get anything amazing new for £50 but that one looks alright. Would get second hand too but still unsure of what is decent and whats not.

Anyone used that redsnapper one or have any ideas on other tripods to get?
 
RedSnapper tripods have been getting rave reviews here on the forum, generally buyers are more than happy.

Folded length will not include the head, add another 10cm approx for that.

To get a good tripod under 50cm total, you need a 'traveller' style where the legs fold upwards 180 degrees to enclose the head. They tend to be more expensive, but look at Benro and Giottos.
 
yes but if i am right, you can remove the head right? fitting it in my bag is just for checking it on flights. any other time i will usually be going out specifically to use the tripod at night, so carrying it/weight isn't much of a problem.

Oh right, yes head comes off easily. Though they usually have locking grub-screws underneath, just need a small screwdriver.

excellent, i may have a look at what my local camera shops have to offer and order the redsnapper one if nothing comes up

I have further questions... After looking at tripods in my local camera shops, I have become suspicious of the redsnapper one here - http://www.redsnapperuk.com/camera-accessories/RS-284_and_RSH-24_3-way_head_.html#a92

It looks great but I cant find anything even slightly similar in a shop for under double that price at least.

Can someone reassure me that this will work with a D90 and 16-85mm lens for light use (not all day everyday, just the occasional landscape use once every few weeks)

Yes, it's a decent tripod. RedSnappers are not the best tripods in the world, but they're great value for money. They get the price mainly because they deal direct, no retailer's margin. They're actually made in the same factory as Slik, which is one of the better tripod brands.

Personally, I don't care for those budget-end pan-tilt heads. Much prefer a quality ball head, and the RedSnapper RSH-12 is also exceptional value, though it will add a lot to the basic tripod price. Well worth it IMHO, though you can just bolt one on at a later date.
 
Yeah was thinking I could upgrade the head at a later date, mainly the legs I'd keep for longer, thanks!
 
I have Redsnapper legs with an RSH-12 head, excellent quality for the price, especially the head, but comparatively heavy compared to "travel" tripods, not a problem if you aren't walking too far. For everyday carry when I don't know if I'll even use a support I use a Gitzo 1542T with a Redsnapper RSH-61 ballhead, which is @ half the weight of the other combo, but very stable for the weight. Here is a picture of it under the flap of a Think Tank Retro10 with the Redsnapper for comparison.

Ah great thanks! Good to see a better photo of the legs. Have gone ahead and ordered it now anyway so I'll see what its like soon.
 
Ok so the tripod arrived today, very very quickly I might add, and I wasn't in so the courier drove across the city to deliver it to my work, which was pretty awesome!

I haven't gone out and done any real world testing yet, but this tripod and head seem absolutely amazing, a million miles away from the £5 flimsy thing I have been using until now.

I haven't had much experience with high end tripods but this one seems more comparable to the ~£150 ones I have been looking at this week in the shops. It cost under £60!!

That is all...
