Hey guys, i'm looking to buy a short range lens but struggling to find a decent enough price for one. ideally i'm looking to get something along the lines of a 24-70mm f2.8 that wont kill my wallet.

if you know anything similar focal lengthed that would be great. the Canon 24-105mm lens is essentially what i would be going for if i never had a Nikon.

Any help is much appreciated!

24-120 if f4 is okay.
35-70 f2.8 if you don't need 24mm.

Thanks guys, will take a look at those! its an F mount body.

Well, Fx lenses will work on any F mount camera while Dx ones will WORK on any F mount camera but will vignette horribly on an Fx body (or will switch the Fx body into Dx mode.)

Just say what camera it is, you will get more help then.

Not a problem, Connor. For reference, the D5300 is a Dx body.

Fx is Nikon's designation for a DSLR with a sensor area measuring (as near as damn it!) 36mm x 24mm (Full Frame) - the same as 35mm film while Dx is their name for a smaller sensor, closer to the size of an APS-C frame at 24mm x 16mm (Crop Sensor). This means that Fx lenses will cover a Dx sensor but Dx lenses won't cover an Fx sensor. As a result, Fx lenses are bigger (like for like) than Dx lenses and so heavier. The 24-70mm f/2.8 lens you mentioned in the original post is an Fx lens - heavy and expensive. You don't say which body the Canon 24-105 was mounted on and that does matter as far as getting the same Field of View goes (look at Wikipedia's article on crop factors to see what I mean.)

The Nikon 18-55 VR kit lens is decent optically, and inexpensive, if you don't need a wide aperture.

Also bear in mind that the D5300 needs a lens with a built in focus motor in order to AF. Nikon's AF-S.

Its a Nikon D5300, Don't know anything really about DX and FX so sorry about that..
Thats a crop sensor so none of the afore mentioned lenses mentioned bar the 18-55mm would be best advised, yes you could use them but with the crop factor of a DX body you will be looking at some wierd focal lengths, ie a 24-70mm will have the equivilant focal length of 36-105mm

Ideally look to something like the Nikon 16-85mm which will have an effective focal length of 24-127mm or a Tamron 17-50mm for effective 24.5-75mm

It does help if you give us the information asked, im pretty sure we all knew you were inexperienced but we cant help if you dont help us

Tamron 17-55 f/2.8 is decent value for the money much better and can be found cheaper than the Sigma equivalent apart from build every bit as good as the Nikon version.

Right, thanks guys. ill have a look around at these lenses. sorry again, i have a good understanding of how to take pictures and use a camera. just not about the internals and what not!

Connor another lens to look at is the Sigma 17-70 which is a DX lens and will give you the equivalent focal length of the Canon 24-105mm you mentioned in first post.

Some of the other lenses mentioned above.

The sigma 17-50 > http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sigma-17-50mm-Optical-Stabilised-Nikon/dp/B003A6NU3U

Tamron 17-50 > http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tamron-SP-1..._sbs_23_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=1V1A5TKARZ70D1BPP3SD This one has Vibration reduction, but they also do one without. For me I prefer the VC.

And if your feeling flush the Nikon version > http://www.wexphotographic.com/buy-...=72342106929&gclid=cofw2ows6sucfeywtaodnwoaoq

You can get the Nikon version from dealers secondhand for between £450 - £500. http://www.harrisoncameras.co.uk/Us...D-215032.htm?gclid=CKrutLKS6sUCFaPnwgodXTgAGA

Hi Connor

According to your profile you already have the Tamron 18-200mm. What is it about that lens you don't like? It seems to cover the focal lengths you mention.
