Small, Lightweight Tripod Recommendations

Afternoon All,

I'm looking for a tripod, I have my rather large manfrotto tripod but I'm looking for something small and lightweight.

I would prefer it if it folded/Collapsed up into a nice little package what wouldn't get in the way attached to my rucksack or even fit in the rucksack, I also need it to be lightweight.

It doesn't have to be mega tall, perhaps chest height or a little more.

However I also need it to be able to hold a D700, grip, and 14-24 lens sturdy

Does anybody have any recommendations for the tripod and perhaps I can buy a decent head afterwards?

Benro Travel Angel. Buy the carbon legs and use head of your choice.
 
I use the Hama Traveller Compact Pro, and have it with me all the time. It's a good lightweight tripod, but also has some nifty touches, such as the legs being able to spread really wide to get very low down. The centre column can be split, and reversed to hang the camera underneath.

It comes with a standard ball and socket head which attaches by 3/8" thread, so you can use a different head if you want.
 
I bought a Giottos Vitruvian last week for the same reason.. I took it out today on its first proper outing, and Im very imprrssed. Its so light weight, I kept checking my bag to make sure it haddnt fallen off. In the end, I kept it attached to the camera (A D700 with 24-70) and to be honest, I found it easier carrying the tripod and camera together with one arm, than having the tripod in a bag and the camera around my neck. I carried ot around for about 3 hours on very rough terrain, and my arm is fine, and its didnt weigh me down at all.

The ball head is ok, its rated for 4KG, they do a bigger one that you can buy seperately though. The tripod folds up on itself, so its really small about 40 cm when folded. The legs gor flat, and the center colum is reversable. Its also turns into a monopod if you take on leg off and attach the center column which is pretty handy.

I like the look of this one, a mixture of not to cheap but not ridiculously expensive too

Is the carbon worth it? the Aluminium one is almost half the price and not that much heavier

Looks a little flimsy though, I'd feel a little uneasy putting my larger SLR on there, but thanks for the suggestion

How high is chest height? I use a Velbon Ultra Maxi F; I'm about 5'8" and a bit, and when fully extended it would be about the same level as my heart. Folds up quite nicely and isn't heavy.

Avoid the Manfrotto Modo Maxi if you're in any way tempted, seemed fairly flimsy to me, so I got shot of it after using it more for camcorder than SLR...

I am presently lusting after a Vitruvian for lightweight duties, but there's a few things above it on "the list" :D
