Just tried my hand at some smoke trails, using a black cardboard background and 2 flash heads.
what is the best way to get the background 'black' using either Lightroom 3 or CS5 as at the moment its a greyish/black colour....easy steps please.
appreciate any help
Dave

Are you controlling the spill onto the background?

Are you over-exposing?

Examples would really help.. including a set-up shot if you can.

Alastair - test image attached - sorry no shot of set up, 2 flash heads one either side of table pointing out from the black cardboard background to try and prevent spill.
Camera set to Manual f11 1/125

You may still be getting spill onto the background if the flash is bouncing back off something.

These are my recent smoke trails http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=275955

I only used 1 flash for them and that was coming in from the right side at 90 degrees to the camera.
On the left side I had a constant light source to illuminate the smoke for focus.
My background was black card and I used a home made snoot to direct the flash light straight onto the smoke.

You could also have the flash below the smoke pointing straight up or slightly forwards.

Thanks guys, appreciate all your help.....will try another set up.
Dave
