SNOW - JAN

Bloody loads of the stuff here!

2009?

We had a bit here, my friend popped round for half an hour and it had all melted under his van. Expecting more though, which i'm not too happy about. Got my friends car here which would have been fixed before christmas if it wasn't for the snow.

I am fed up with it, two weeks never seen the temp rise above -1. It was great for a few days, out with the camera and off work, but when you are scrapping the windows in the morning and it is minus 11, and driving on un-gritted roads, you will be praying to the Sun God :(

I have seen my first good snowdrift since the 70s but still only about 3 feet deep still the b roads here have a good 2" of snow on top of the ice but the main roads are useable with extreme care, the M181 is off limits though

Oh no ...... just looked out of the window and its here again, tipping it down:shake:

Lots of snow here in Essex! Doesn't look like it's going to stop anytime either. I'm happy but also sad because I know I'm going to have to work in this on saturday :p

This was the scene on the main A27 heading in towards Fareham last night at 8:15 the traffic didn't clear until around midnight.

This is the view from my bedroom window this morning, people have been trapped in their cars on the A3 all night, incredible chaos.

Probably 3" in Southampton, snowing quite heavily again now.

Working from home today, some colleagues got stuck A3 southbound last night, they got home 7/8am this morning!

I ditched the car last night because of the heavy traffic, walked back and got it home when the roads were less busy about 11pm last night. One of the main exits of the city was not gritted at all, causing massive jams. IMHO there is no defence for this - they knew it was coming and didn't send gritters out early! The ones that I did see from about 9:30 onwards kept going up and down side roads and didn't bother with the main road!

I dont see me getting to work for the rest of this week!

Always the gritters fault eh? I personally feel it's unrealistic to rely on gritters for snow in the UK. A country built around it's road infrastructure. Not gonna happen. Just don't drive in it. I heard about the people stuck on the A3 last night but frankly, it's poor planning on their part and why didn't they just walk to somewhere? Let me think....stranded on A3 for 9 hours through the night or walk home within 3 hours.

And now Essex County Council are saying they don't have enough salt........great!

they must be using it on their chips then - Gritters in my dark corner of Essex only come out once a month or so, and that's generally when it's warm. That aside, there's still no reason for everything to grind to a halt. Back in the old days everyone still drove, the schools stayed open and everyone just got on with it. Can't quite put my finger on when it all got silly.

If this main road had been gritted it wouldn't of caused the massive backlog of traffic, but they negated to do it, so there was a 5/6 hour queue of traffic - once people got to the top of the hills they simply disappeared.. It wasn't that bad, with grit it would of been fine.

Agree on the ditching thing if it gets really bad though.

To be fair conditions are unusually difficult this year but I think both parties are to blame. It's certainly true that some people make completely unnecessary journeys in dire conditions but as a nation we've become completely reliant on cars.

The other side however is that councils etc have only so much money to spend and I'm pretty sure that sometimes finances outweigh the publics need to be able to use their cars.

I'm currently off work as the College I work in is closed, having said that I'm completely snowed-in, no chance of using the car and the buses were cancelled earlier, I live on a small housing estate which in the last 4weeks hasn't had a single side road cleared/gritted.

I remember when local farmers/plant hire companies used to be contracted to clear side roads/estates etc and it was generally done very quickly - this doesn't seem to happen anymore, my guess is that money is the issue again ??
