Snow Leopard Problems...

Yes
I installed Snow Leopard yesterday and now i find that my printer or scanner will not work! The printer is a HP deskjet 5150 and my scanner is a Canon LIDE 600. I can launch the scanner but when i want to scan an image in it says 'application quit unexpectedly'
Apparently there are big problems with Snow leopard at the moment with lots of applications not running with it. See the following link
http://www.pcworld.com/article/171129/snow_leopard_users_4_biggest_gripes.html

I had a beta pre-release trial installed on one of my macs a while ago and loads of problems occured when running programmes...typically the application quit unexpectedly.

I picked up the release DVD on Sat from Apple and installed that and I must say so far so good. No problems have hung or stopped working and my printer installed right away without any disks or drivers (must say at this point that I did a format on my HD and a fresh install of Snow as it was about time it had a clean up).

If your printer/scanner has any proprietary software, maybe have a look if there has been any updates for snow leopard

So far, I have an old issue that has come back, not exactly life threatening but after the screen saver kicks in and I resume active use, my macbook pro's LCD white balance is very cold.

I have to put both screens to sleep and wake em up to resolve the anomaly.
It happened last year but a leoapard update sorted it, guess I just have to wait for a new update to iron it out.

Also Cyberduck (FTP client) had to be updated, that totally bummed.

Yeah my Cyberduck went belly up too but Apple linked to the latest download on their site which corrected the issue. Thats the only problem I have had so far and I have put it on my iMac, Mac Pro and my MacBook Air so all in all pretty pleased

I had a similar issue with scanning from my HP AIO, HP seem to have bailed out with their HP Scan Pro software on SL:
New with Snow Leopard, the Scanning interface to these HP Inkjet All-in-One devices is now built into Snow Leopard and supported with the Apple Image Capture application.

Read this: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01846935&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=1153494&os=219&lang=en

Maybe the same applies for your Canon scanner?

I used Image Capture for some scanning the other night and it worked well.

Yeah, I'm fairly happy with it too mate.
I've noticed the performance increases, admittedly marginal but they are there and noticeable.
Quicktime is much, much better, the browsable stacks saves a fair bit of fiddling and I'm quite appreciative of the minimise to dock icon for the apps.

As I said, my troubles are minor at most and I dare say the updates will be shot of them anyhoo.

As a windows user I find HP are very slow to provide software updates for their printers/scanners.

I assume HP are continuing to support this printer?

Anyone else 1D stopped working on firwire? It crashes EOS Utility!

EOS Utility loads fine when I manually start it... but as soon as I plug the camera in it bums out. Yet I can retrieve the images with Image Capture!

I had major issues getting my 1DIII to connect to my mac and download the images using Canon EOS Capture and Utility but that was on 10.5.6. Everytime I connected the camera my mac would die. In the end I uninstalled it and just use Lightroom to import my images.

Hadn't thought about that! Cheers! :D

Damn! That doesn't sound good, my 1D is at Fixation, I normally import to Lightroom using a card reader, but it is useful to be able to connect via FW.

Where are people getting the latest Cyberduck from? The version on the Apple site is 3.2 which is the old one that didn't work for me. I'm running the beta at the moment and it isn't too stable.

I'm on the beta duck and all seems well, no quacks yet but I've only used it twice today

Cyberduck beta working well in the field so far..

Only tried it on wireless as my big problem has been that my TMobile 3G USB stick instantly causes a Kernel Panic and crashes my MBP the second it's put in to the machine.. major league bummer :(

Anyone know how to get back to Leopard without a TM backup as I need my 3G connection for the weekend and the T-Mobile fix isn't even being started until the 7th!

10.6.1 has been seeded so not to long for an update (printer issue fix listed as one update)

The 10.6.1 Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Snow Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac, including fixes for:

- compatibility with some Sierra Wireless 3G modems
- an issue that might cause DVD playback to stop unexpectedly
- some printer compatibility drivers not appearing properly in the add printer browser
- an issue that might make it difficult to remove an item from the Dock
- instances where automatic account setup in Mail might not work
- an issue where pressing cmd-opt-t in Mail brings up the special characters menu instead of moving a message
- Motion 4 becoming unresponsive

No problems here apart from Parallels Desktop not working under 64bit. But that was fixed with an update after 24 hours.

my printer stopped working too

i deleted the folder (in my case Minolta) from library/printers then re-installed the driver and added it in systems prefs. sorted

since snow leopard install i've also had the screen using screen savers sometimes (when i never asked it to) and it sets the brightness to 0 every time i restart the laptop.

I'm getting unexpected quit errors with CS4

Tis a royal pain in the butt if you've been working on image :(

Any particular reason that you run a screen saver? I'd just turn it off.

Unless one is a CRT, there is no need. LCDs do not suffer screen burn and thus screen-savers are unnecessary.

It's more 'Image Persistence' as opposed to screen burn tbh, mind you I still have a habit from my CRT days.

Plus disabling my screen saver is not the point really, there's a bug and eventually it will be fixed.

Yeah i reckon Apple must be working around the clock to sort this out so i dare say updates will be along soon enough.

You think? From my experience, they tend to think everyone else should update their software :D

General rule I follow is wait until at least the .3 update before upgrading - and don't apply updates for at least a fortnight after they are released. It's not unknown for them to break something critical and be withdrawn/changed very quickly.

Does the same thing happen if you just put the displays to sleep directly by having their sleep time set shorter than the screen saver time?

It's totally intermittent and has no real predictable behaviour, as I mentioned above, it's not life threatening, just a little annoying, I dare say ole Ap will have it in the bag in no time

I've noticed that the screen brightness resets to maximum each time the imac is started

Yup, don't be eager ;)

I have just noticed that Aperture wont open, says that this version of Aperture will not open with this version of OS X. I have Aperture 2.1 on there and it worked fine with 10.5.7. Had a little look on google but cant find anything on it yet.
Good thing is I dont really use Aperture anyway, use Lightroom mostly and that works fine

Before updating to any new OS always check on the web for application compatibility, also support for any hardware you use. What doesn't help is drivers being described as being compatible for OS X 10.5 upwards, you never know if the last update they were tested with was only 10.5.1. Another wise move is to use carbon copy cloner to clone your drive before updating, then it's easy to put back if you run into problems. It's faster than Time Machine and free. The latest carbon copy cloner is 10.6 compatible even if it does sometimes report odd errors for some users, a known problem the programmer knows about. Most but not all errors are due to older incompatible software, or some companies being too slow updating for 10.6. My personal Mac's are older and stuck at 10.5.8, but at work we've only updated 2 Mac's for support purposes. If you must install the first version, the most trouble free way to install is to clone to another drive, transfer activation on any Adobe software, wipe the Mac's drive, install 10.6 and iLife, update, reinstall your apps and drivers, then copy back your data and relevant support and .plist files from the User library.

2.1.4 update is available Paul...

HTH... :D

:p

Ok will give it a go thanks.

You would at least think it would let me update from the programme though instead of just telling me it wont work then closing it down?

Indeedy... ... though I have to say I did not experience any opening issues before the Aperture upgrade... :suspect:

:p

is anyone else with an imac having the screen brightness issue?

mine jumps to full brightness every time the machine starts, i'll have no retinas left at this rate

Not that I would notice Brian... ... but then I hardly ever switch off... ... AND my brightness is always full on...

:p

Ive had a few more unexpected quite errors from CS4 too. Also from A Better Finder Rename.
Normally when working with a large batch of large files or something.

Not sure if it has already been mentioned but Bento needs to be updated to the latest version (2.0.5) for Snow Leopard.

I don't have the brighteness issue, my iMac boots at the last-used setting.

I have it on order and should be with me this week. Not sure if i want to load it now after all these issues!!

It's now 14/10/09 - Anyone had automatic updates from Apple yet?
