Snowy Snowdonia

It never snows by me so I decided to visit Snowdonia to take a look at real snow and mountains. It was far better than I could have hoped for. At times it was like driving through the Alps. Blue skies, gorgeous sun light, huge snow covered valleys. Just breathtaking. I got some Provia film for my EOS50 and also took my A70. I've yet to develop the Provia but I took a look through my A70 shots. Annoyingly f/8 just isn't enough for landscape photography, but at these sizes it doesn't look too bad. I had a great day and totally love my TomTom device. It takes away any worry about finding your way home. You can just drive around looking for photos knowing you can hit the home button when its time to leave. It was also great because it shows roads by the lakes so you can tell TomTom to take you to these vantage points. Very very handy.

So all these shots were taken on my little Canon A70 3.2 MP camera. I was very impressed by its performance after using my 10D for the past 18 months.

This first shot was probably the nicest place I found. I had googled the area looking for ideas and I was happy to find this place. Let me set the scene. I had Radio 1 on in the car as I arrived and KT Tunstall was reading a passage from her favourite book. It was snowing, the clouds were drifiting over the mountains and I was listening to KT Tunstall's very lovely voice. Kinda makes me wanna move out there :)

This was taken at the Llanberris Pass. I stopped at the car park were nutters go walking up Snowdon. The car park was near full! The view must have been amazing though.

Taken later on in the day when the light was nicer. I spent a lot of the time hand holding my 58mm polarizer in front of my A70 to get a nicer shot :) While I was here I browsed TomTom for my next place to visit. According to TomTom Snowdon was 40 mins away. I was debating visiting it as it was the point of my trip. However, I seemed to recall that the view from Llyn Peris did indeed include Snowdon. I was debating a 40 minute drive to god knows where or whether I should revisit Llyn Peris now the sun was shining and the skies were blue. Llyn Peris being 20 mins away.

I decided to revisit Llyn Peris and boy was I glad I did. I found this place on the way there. The view from the shore line of Llyn Peris. Just a perfect shot. I took some with my EOS50 @ 20mm so I hope they come out ok.

I put it into black and white and got stuck. Colour had lovely blues and things, but black and white also looked great. I dunno which I prefer. Depends which I look at :)

Finally arriving back at Llyn Peris looking at what I later found out was Snowdon. A few more photographers had turned up by this point. I can't imagine why ;)

Good stuff. :) Not keen on the B&W's but proves the point again, it's not the camera, it's what's behind it.

 What don't you like about them?

Black and white generally doesn't work for me with landscape photography either. The colour is a massive part of what you're photographing.

Good stuff. I like B & W landscape as you can concentrate on the tone and patterns in the landscape. Looks like your trip was certainly worth it.

Well it can be, but it doesn't have to be imho. Just look at Ansel Adams :)

What GFK says really. The colour versions are so strong I just feel the B&W loses something.

BTW what's that black splodge in the reflection of the sky underneath the boat?

I think I know what you mean. Its probably why I can't decide which I prefer. I love the colours in the colour shots, but then I love the black and white shots too for the tones. The black splodge is a buoy or something.

Oh nice series of shots there Pete! Beatutiful place. I would have to agree and say the colour works best in these pics. #6 is just absolutely beautiful, the black and white version doesn't do it justice imo.

Oooh so THATS snow! I was starting to forget what it looked l like. Dopey Midland weather is soooooo boring.

You have some lovely shots, I think the first one is my favourite, lots of different textures; fluffy clouds, gravely hills, rippling water and sharp grass things... lol don't know what they're called.

I agree that some of the other B&W shots don't have quite the same impact as in colour but its good to experiment; you don't know til you try it what its going to look like.

Same for Wirral which I why I drove for nearly 2hrs to find it in Wales :) Tired of hearing about heavy snow fall while I have blue skies.

Ya big softy ! :laugh1:

But I know what you mean ! ;)

Stunning scenery photographed by soemone with an eye for it ... excellent stuff Pete. You should get out more ! :whistle2: esp. if this is the result.

Does show what can be done with moderate equipment though and totally reinforces what Dod said !

TFS Pete and pleased you had a good day - great to see the evidence ! :thumb:

Brilliant landscapes - all excellent shots, good to see some real snow finally:thumb:

Yer I've only been waiting about 6 years :D It finally arrives and my 10D is broke. Well I'm not having that so off I go with my A70 :D

nice shots Pete, i think i prefer the colour versions tbh, thought the monos are fine!

Well worth the drive and beautiful pictures - so far not enough snow to fully hide the grass all winter here so far, but some forcast tonight and I have an early morning cross country drive. Will take the camera just in case they grow a mountain in the Fens.

You always did get great shots with that little canon of yours.
Nice to see it still has a place in your armoury, and still produces the goods.
