As a general walkabout lens "Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro" on my 50d. I currently use a "Canon 17-85mm IS." for this sort of thing however iv'e recently purchased a sigma 10-20mm uwa so the wide end is covered by that. I think its the faster f2.8 thats calling me , so over to you.
 
Yeah its not a bad lens. Its not the best version of that particular lens, which is the HSM version, but its perfectly acceptable.

I had the even older version which was supposed to be worse than the macro on my old D700 and it was my most used lens.

Its not all that sharp wide open on the corners but gets better as you open up, it wont be as noticeable on the 50D anyhow, as the center of the lens is pretty sharp all the way through.

Took a look at the 17-55 f2.8 Canon? Buy once buy right. Costs more but you wont have that niggling feeling of wanting to upgrade!
 
Agreed the Canon is far superior (Ive had that too!). If you are considering the Sigma HSM version which is £500+, then seriously consider a 2nd hand 17-55. Sharp as a witches nipple throughout the range, and probably better built.
