So I've always wondered why people would spend £5000 on a camera...

I was always happy with my 40d. I wouldn't mind the full frame, super pro speed uber image quality 5d/1ds, but I've never really had an issue with my 40d.

I love using the 5D, it's a pleasure to use, but I've never used any 1 series cameras, until yesterday.

I briefly used the 1d, fired that bad boy off at 10fps, amazing. Autofocus was unbelievable, I really couldn't believe it. Built like a bricks***house, perfectly crafted for my fingers, and felt wonderful with a 135/2 L on there.

Then, wow, I tried out the 1Ds, holy carp that viewfinder!
it was like holding a miniature cinema up to my eye!

I think it's safe to say I have a 1ds lust now.
I don't even care that my pitiful 24-60 won't do it justice and my 10-20/55-250 won't fit, I want that camera.

I also had a go with the D3 and the Nikkor 24-70, just as beautiful.

:D

I must say I love my 1DS with my 24-105. but would love a 17-40 on it

I'm quite happy in the knowledge that a 50D will soon be coming my way. A 1D would be a dream, but i just can't justify the HUGE price tag. 10FPS would be perfect for BMX stuff, and the AF on the thing is super fast, but i think unless you are making good money from your pic's, it is a little bit of overkill. If you have the money and can justify spending a small family car on equipment, then go for it. But there are crop camera's out there that can do the job for the average man in the street, just my thought's on it.

Currys at J9 M6 have the 1D Mk III in stock for £2397.80, cheapest on CPB is £2940 at amazon

You didn't get to play with a D3x??? I don't actually know anyone who has yet!

 Me too :)

I've just about got to grips with the beastie now (hey it's only taken a year to get to boss it about) and I'm loving it. The 17-40mm will replace the Sigma 15-30 that I currently have. Just the small matter of pennies to consider. Lord knows it's not cheap but I'm investing in what, hopefully, is my future. Should try it with some primes MD, it's immense! :D

D3X - overkill, I looked at one to upgrade the D3....I'll just buy more D3s!

The extra resolution is only of benefit if you are studio based and doing high end advertsing - otherwise the D3 is more than enough anyway ( and if your shots are on the mark, the difference in quality will not be an issue anyway).

The D3X is not an improvement for me - I like the faster frame rate, even thouh I don't use it very often. 3 or 4 frames are all you need if you time your shot properly. I still have ASA 100, if I go donw to LO 1 or whatever it is (3 clicks of the wheel anyway!)

200 has a benefit if you use polariser most of th etime - the ability to go to high ASA without degrading the image beyond usability....far more use than the extra pixels at a cost of reduced film speed range, frame rate and additional cost.

The way I look at it is: will I get more work as a result of buying this? If the answer is no, then I don't.

I've played with a 1D MkIII not so long ago and the AF in low light was amazing! It was also like you had a machine gun held to your eye too.

Lonnnnnnnng way of buying one of those. :'(

If I had bucket loads of cash I'd love to buy a D3 or even D3x but just can't afford one BUT I would buy one given to chance. A £5K camera is really a £10K camera outfit when you buy the glass to do it justice and that amount of money is just silly :) At least glass holds it's value well but after a couple a years the new one will be out and then its value will be significantly less so you need to get the use out of it!

People spending a lot on gear also brings up a similar question...

Why do people pay £30k+ on cars?

Simple answer, because they can afford it.

If more people bought 5K cameras, they'd gradually become 3 or 4K cameras (d/t supply & demand ;)), so I'm all for it !

There would also be more 2nd hand ones in a couple of years too. I wonder when the D3x will be selling for £500 ? :)

That's how I got my 1Ds so I'm all for lots and lots of people buying them. :)

I have a D1x that I paid £180 for on here. It was a really decent camera when it was launched which means that it still is! Yes other things have gone past it but it still takes a really good picture and the size is great in my hands. Would like to get a D2x now but saving up for the D700's replacement for some FF fun later ;) I can't afford a D3 / D3x

if you are earning a living with the kit then nothing else will do the job

its a must have situation pro kit for pro work

The way I see it is, I don't get paid for my photos (or aspire to get paid for them) and my 40D does everything I want / need it to and more besides (and will always remain that way!)

I also can't justify the cost of most of it, so I don't buy it - mainly as I haven't got a spare £5k + lying around that I don't mind spending!! :gag:

On the other hand, if you think about it, the 45 point AF system has to help nail the focus on BIF shots, so in that sense, I really do need a 1D mk3!! :bonk:

Hmm, think I had better start playing the lottery!

Oh, god, yeah.

If I were to get a 1ds or a d3x I would be getting the 17-40/14-24, 24-70 and 70-200/2.8 IS/VR for each camera, plus a couple of SB-900's/580ex's.

And that alone is £10k.
Stupid money.

But!
Having said that, for formula one racing, only a formula one car will do, regardless of cost!

Factor in the price of selling the body after a couple of years and the price becomes more appealing!

I bought D2Xs for about £2,200 .. sold it a couple of years later for just about £1,000. That's £1,200 for 2 years of use, for top of the range body ... frankly, very well worth every penny spent. If I'm not mistaken Grey of Westeminester have D2Xs 2nd-hand going for over £1,000!

True, bodies don't hold prices as good as lens .. but they're not that far out of reach if you can afford the initial investment and keep it in tip-top condition.

Another thing .. just because a new body is released dosen't mean that I have to upgrade! Of course, you may think I'm talking rubbish as I went from D200 => D300 => D700 .. but I've also gone from D70 => D40 .. and I am now looking to buy a D200 all over again (D200 for low ISO is amazing).

So, if I have the money to buy the D3x I'd go ahead without a thought .. even if I'm not earning a penny from it. A couple of years down the line I'll sell it for a good £2,500. That's not a bad amount to pay for a body, if you're a keen hobbiest.
