Hey all, I now have my first DSLR in the shape of a mint second hand 40D and awaiting shipment of a lens that I got on eBay this afternoon which is going to take a few days to arrive...

Is there anything I can do without a lens!? Im sat here looking at such an intresting piece of kit wondering if I can do anything with it haha!

James

You could post it to me? I'll give it back.......honest

Seriously though, not much! You could always drill a hole in the body can and make a pinhole camera type thing? Not sure about the details, I'm sure I remember reading about it somewhere!

Read the manual, and have a look around the menus and such till you know were everything is and when you go shooting youll already know about your camera where all the setting are instead of faffing and having to think now how do I do this and that thus youll be concentrating on taking the images

Not a lot apart from holding it. I had no lens at all for about a month last year with my 30D....it just stayed in the bag really.

If your fridge needs defrosting you could use it to keep the door open

Oops sorry, that's what Nokins are for ;)

haha lovin these, keep em coming!

Watching the shutter go at 6 flips a minute was probably the first thing I did and its making me go dizzy!

Punch a tiiiiiny tiny hole in the body cap and give digital pinhole a try? Google it, there's tips for how to do it in various places.

Edit: can you do an exposure of over 30s without a remote on the 40D? if not, don't bother

Load the software on your pc and start learning how to get the best out of it. The software is really good.

just what I was going to suggest :)

yeah you can go over 30 seconds but you have to hold the shutter button, so camera shake :(

to be fair though, camera shake is the least of your worries with regards to image quality with pinhole :D

I'm sure that there's a 'Bulb' setting on the 40D, check the manual.

I wouldn't recommend making a hole in the cap itself, make a replacement cap with a pinhole in it.
Also, take a shot of a blank wall, with long exposure, use photoshop or the like and make sure you have no dust on the sensor

Also, do you have a CF card to go in the camera?

Glue a coke can on the front and pretend:)

Pretty boring but clear all functions and go through all the menus and re set to your taste, set up the 3 picture controls like landscape, portrait and studio.
set up the my menu option.
If you get really bored read the manual.
Other than that pop down to your local dealer and see if he has a cheap used 50mm f1,8 lens and start shooting.

To the OP, the 40D's good design, weight and ergonomics lend it being the ideal doorstop or window breaker. ;)

19 posts for this to turn into a Nikon vs. Canon war! Not bad going

Now we just need some Sony Alpha fanboys/girls to join the party
