So who's getting the new Nikkor 800mm then?

and if it wasn't long enough it comes with a teleconvertor!
 
Thinking about buying 2 and taping them together to make an impressive looking set of binoculars :lol:
 
I'm thinking of getting one for some subtle street photography.

Might also get one for portraiture if it comes with a free megaphone.

Can absolutely guarantee it. They are a lot of people (even just in the UK) who wouldn't even notice spending £16,000. Only a subset will be interested in photography and only a further subset will be interested in photography and want an 800mm lens but there will be some.

But in seriousness this isn't as expensive as people are making out, or at least I feel the price is justified. Whilst the likes of me will probably only ever see/use one at Focus wildlife, press, paps and surveylance photographers will probably be lining up to at least rent this even if it's not an ownable lens due to cost.

I've seen plenty of people say they own the canon 800 5.6 or sigma 300-800 5.6 (there's also a sigma 800 prime). So there is a market, and I suspect the price will come down a grand or so given enough time, I recall the Sigma 200-500 2.8 being about 25k, now Wex lists it under 13.
 
The RRP of the Canon 800 5.6 when it came out (in 2008) was $12,000. taking in to consideration what the MkII versions of the 400/500/600mm lenses are being introduced at (15-20% more than the originals) and also how much lenses have inflated over the past 5 years then it's a reasonable figure.

No matter how much the manufactures RRP the lenses for, you'll always have a market - there are always going to be applications among industry, in sports, wildlife and also paparazzi etc!

How many "amateurs" will buy them? I'm sure there'll always be a few who have the cash.

Personally, I'd love one, but will never buy one as I have no justification. I have no reason to own a 600mm f/4 but I'm still going to buy one, because I can afford it.
 
I had considered one when there were hints of it being produced. I had been told that it would be about £10k.
I gave it some thought and decided that the D4 with my 200-400mm f4 and the 2.0III converter bolted on would be better value. Yes, it's f8, but that's why the D4 replaced my
D3s. It can focus at a respectable speed at f8 and produce good shots. So, I have
400-800mm f8 at my disposal. Perfect for the hills. If I need it. Or just stick to 200-400mm f4 Or, use the 1.4.

Can't just use the 2x TCIII to make 1600mm no? bah, that's me out then ...

On a more general note, I suspect very few people have a need for such a lens (as distinct for having one for bragging).
I was fortunate enough to borrow a canon 800mm last summer for some very specific bird shots I was attempting for the RSPB, and although it was fine for static shots....try following anything with it!!
Besides, it almost knackered me carrying it to the hide!!

For me a 500mm plus telecon is a more sensible option.
