Hi, Probably done to death but what software do people use for editing pics. At the moment I have Nikons 'ViewNX' software.

Recommendations appreciated,

Gerard.

How much editing do you want to do?

If you shoot raw, Lightroom is great for developing and now £95 from Amazon.

Cheaper is Photoshop Elements 10 at around £50.

Free is paint.net which does all the basics and worth trying to get a feel for editing.

An alternative to Photoshop is GIMP which is powerful but takes a hell of a learning curve.

Iv'e been using Cyberlink PhotoDirector for a few months now and starting to love it. OK it's not perfect, but that can be said for any or all software. Just trying V3 Beta and improvements are coming!

What do you want to do to your pictures that ViewNX can't do?

If it really is ViewNX, and not ViewNX2 you're using, you can download the newer version free from Nikon.

Lightroom all the way for me. Dont really ever use Photoshop now.

Thanks for the replies. I'll get the latest version of viewnx and get some practise in before deciding on whether that is good enough or if I need to purchase new software.

Cheers,

Gerard.

Adobe PSE / Lightroom have 30 day trials that are worth checking out before purchasing to see if they suit.

I use Canon's software and also Elements...

For me, does the job

Lightroom 3 and nothing else. I have Photoshop CS3 but I have hardly used it at all since buying it three/four years ago. I find it too overwhelming whilst Lightroom is so simple to use and is surprisingly powerful.

The vast majority of people would say Lightroom (me included) download the trials and see how you get on. LR4 is not far around the corner so while £95 is a good deal at the moment on lr3 if you want to upgrade in 6 months time it might be worth hanging on.

Aperture 3 for me. I really liked iphoto when I bought my macbook a few years back, but I wanted more editing power. I tried GIMP but there wasn't enough support to learn it and it was just different enough to photoshop that the tutorials didn't quite work and had to be adapted. I had made up my mind to get aperture and then they dropped the price in the app store so it was a no brainer for me. I tried lightroom and probably could have gotten on with it, but since I was coming from iphoto the transition to aperture was easier and more integrated into the mac framework. And LR was a lot more expensive once the app store started with aperture. I just got elements with my Wacom tablet, so I'll give it a try for some specialized stuff, but with the brushes in aperture you can do about anything you want.

I use lightroom only for most of my images now and elements on the odd occasion when I need to do something out of the ordinary that requires layers etc.

Gerard,

While you're downloading the latest version of ViewNX2 why not get the trial version of CaptureNX2 as well?
