if you have a Canon 5D MKII and are using it for video you'll be more than pleased to learn that Canon has a firmware update coming next Tuesday, June 2nd, which will allow manual control of aperture, shutter speed and ISO during filming. This update may be downloaded from any of the national Canon web sites.
 
I've read about updates for the software on camera's before. How do you update the software in your camera? Plug it in to the computer?
 
as far as I know you need to upload new firmware on to CF card and run it from camera

I think I'll dig the 'firmware up-loading' instructions out tonight as my bedtime reading!

No wonder my wife loves me. What's not to like?
 
I wish they would fix focusing problems in dark conditions ....
 
..at the end I had to use 430exII and shot with flash...

The Canon web site has full instructions as to the correct way to uodate the software. It's usually part of the software update page.

There are a number of steps

1 Download the software
2 Transfer the update to a CF or apropriate card ( CF in the case of the 5D)
3 From the cameras menu select "software update"
4 Leave it to do "Its thing" usually a few minutes.
5 Check that the software update has been accepted, and start using the camera

But check the exact procedure with the particular software update

Firmware Version 1.1.0 incorporates the following improvements and fixes.

1. Includes a function to enable the manual exposure setting when shooting movies.
2. *For details on how to use this function, please download the PDF files from the bottom of this page. Disables the function of the depth-of-field preview button when images are played back or when the menu screen is displayed on the LCD panel.
3. Fixes a phenomenon where the peripheral illumination of images cannot be properly corrected, even if the images were captured with the lens peripheral illumination correction function set to Enable.
4. *Digital Photo Professional software version 3.6.1 or later (for Windows and Macintosh) can be used to automatically correct the peripheral illumination of RAW and JPEG images that were captured in the Peripheral illumination correction setting with cameras that have Firmware Version 1.0.7 or earlier. Fixes the algorithms of the Auto Lighting Optimizer function when Custom Function C.Fn II-3 Highlight tone priority is enabled.
5. Fixes incorrect indications on the Arabic, Romanian, Spanish, and Ukrainian menu screens.
6. Changes the battery information displayed on the camera when using the optional Battery Grip BG-E6.


It's nice being able to see the battery information for the first time if you have a grip.
 
Oh, BTW,

I saved the firmware update to the hard drive,
connected the camera to the laptop via USB,
started EOS Utility / Camera Settings/Remote shooting, selected Tools & Firmware & followed the prompts to update on the camera which had a newly formatted CF Card.

You can download the update onto a CF card via a card reader & then update the firmware from the camera menu if you prefer
 
I usually just download from the link on Canon website, then double click on the download page and extract directly to G drive, which is the card reader, put the CF card in the camera, find "firmware version line on the camera menu, then click the OK button, the camera senses an update and follow the prompts.

Two minutes or so later, it's done :)
 
Been looking forward to this upgrade for a few weeks now, glad it finally came. However this should have been thought about when designing camera!!!
