Does anybody if there is any software that would let me use my Sony a500 while attached to a laptop using the USB cable, sort of using the laptop as a big "live view" screen

It's called 'tethered' shooting.

The latest Lightroom 3 supports it (and is well worth owning for many other reasons too) but doubtless others will come along with cheaper options. There's a free trial of Lightroom if you wanted to give it a test drive.

Does the Sony software you get with the camera not offer this option ?

I seem to remember the Canon sofware does offer tethered shoting.

Sony A500/550 don't have that option. Only the A700 & A900 (A850 most likely also) have remote camera control.
