Solar Powered Camera Strap

Image doesn't work.

But if I could charge my camera whilst out and about using solar power that would be pretty cool. However the constant charging from the strap would reduce the life of the battery wouldn't it?

I think there would be a few problems with it. The power from each cell on the strap will be pretty low, and at any given time there's a reasonable chance that a lot of it won't be facing the sun, so I think it's total output would be low a lot of the time.

Also in the UK it would only work for about 2 months of the year! ;)

Using modern technology it is a possibility. Remember one doesn't need direct sunlight, increasingly daylight is sufficient to create a charge and this should improve in the future. Obviously there is the issue of the battery losing it's memory when on a constant trickle charge though I believe this issue is also being improved.

I would say this is not a totally daft idea as at first seems the case but....time will tell as with all technological advances, I remember when Startrek communicators were just so much idiocy...

I believe that a solar recharging screen for the next iphone is on the cards, so why not?

It may work, even in the UK. But as to whether it's a decent camera strap in another question!

I have had lots of problems finding the best bag and the best camera strap without having to worry about any "green" issues.

I think there's rather more to what makes a decent strap than the fact that it may recharge my battery.

The Nikon charger for EN-EL3's uses an amp @ 240v to do it's thing.

I'm going to guess that the benefit of this thing will be marginal at best.

And it'll probably cost what a second battery costs.

I suppose if you're hiking through the Wakkan Corridor it might be useful, but other than that I think it's a gimmick.
