Hi guys, i've been togging now for about a year, using a 400d, 18-55IS, Tamron 55-200 (all bought here) and its been great fun and have learned a lot shooting and reading this forum:thumbs:

Things seems to be going pretty well for me, im an offical tog for a local football club Tavistock AFC (Southwestpremier) and have also managed to do a wedding
for my sisters friend, B&G very happy, but so much more to learn.

Im now looking at getting a more 'professional' setup, not PRO pro, but basically something more focused in what i want to do, and of course something that will be more suitable for events/weddings.

Here is my proposed setup;
40D
400D (second body/backup)
Tamron 17-50mm F2.8
Tamron 70-200 F2.8
Either a Sigma 30mm 1.4 or canon 50 1.4

What im looking at is lower light capabilities, and narrower dof. Image quality is not such an issue, or to be more accurate, i am on a budget and realise that the IQ is not going to be L quality, though from what i've read/seen of the lenses, they all seem like they will beat my current lenses in IQ, as well as the previously mentioned things. Same for auto focus, i know they wont be stellar, but will beat my current lineup.

I also realise flash is going to be required, my carrier bag over the pop-up flash trick is ok for friends and family, but it might look a bit odd at a wedding reception:cuckoo:

My biggest dilemma is whether to buy lenses first or a second body?
The idealist in me wants to get the lenses first because they are obviously the biggest factor here affecting what my images will look like.

But the pragmatist in me (probably the wrong word) is thinking get a second body first because of the possibility of doing more weddings in the future. The wedding i shot last month was nerve racking anyway, having only 1 body didnt help with that, (though i thoroughly enjoyed it).

So what first guys, second body or new lens first?:shrug:

EDIT - I know people are gonna say that i shouldnt even consider doing a wedding without 2 bodies and the aforementioned lenses, i understand this, and would much prefer to have at least the 1.4 with a second body before i do another wedding, but if opportunities arise and i think i can do them, then i probably will.

if you are mainly wanting to shoot weddings i'd suggest looking at a 5D classic or a 1ds instead of the 40D

theres a 1dsmk1 in the classified for £480 currently which might be worth a look

that said if you want to do a wedding before you've got your second body , hire a 5dmk2 and build the hire cost into your price

@Simon - Thats just what i wanted to hear:thumbs:

@Pete - Mmm tempting, but that would mean buying more expensive glass to go on them, plus i'd need a monster of a lens to do football.

@Chris - I have looked at it briefly, but from what i can tell its the same price as the canon, so my instinct is to get the canon. This is only based on google results though, i havent found one place that has all this as used equipment, so prices are all over the place.

I've just realised my numptyness in that, i have no idea if either of those lenses are FF compatible, i didnt even consider going full frame, just because of my financial situation. I'll check this out myself though.

I think i might try and get either the 17-50 or one of the primes soon, myself. For my birthday (oct) i'll see if the other half is ok with getting me a 40D. Then a 70-200 for christmas :D :shrug: :exit:

If you're shooting sports, I'd go for the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 HSM mk2 rather than the Tamron. The AF on the Siggy is MUCH faster than the pedestrian AF of the Tamron, and the Siggy is very, very sharp.
 
Yeah, but it's not clear if it's the mk2 or not. It says 'macro' so I think it is (the mk1 never had the 'macro' designation) so I'm pretty sure that's the mk2.

Also, I got mine from amazon who are an official uk dealer so I got mine with the extended 3 yr warranty (and they're cheaper!) while Clifton Cameras isn't an official dealer so you may only get a 1 yr warranty with them.
