Solid state drives

Using Treesize, I just totted up the space used if all of these are installed on C drive: Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit, Office 2007, CS5, LR3, CNX2 & numerous other small programmes. It comes to 72.1GB (approx).

Breakdown:
  • Program Files (x86) = 20.7
  • Program Files = 5.2
  • Program Data = 2.0
  • Windows = 19.9
So a 90GB SSD should be fine for programmes and the OS - as long as all other data (documents, pics, music, etc) is saved to another drive.
Well, I have Win7 Pro, LR, PS5, Android SDK/Eclipse/JDK, Office 2k7, Premiere Pro (trial) plus numerous other programs and I use 30Gb!

I have moved pagefile.sys to another drive and my system restore points are held on another drive.

Hmm, that's odd. Pagefile.sys is 8GB on my machine so ignoring that I'm still using 64.1GB for the rest of the items in the list. Ignore hyberfil.sys as well and it's still 58GB.

Can you run Treesize Free and give your sizes for each of these?

  • Program Files (x86) =
  • Program Files =
  • Program Data =
  • Windows =
  • Other =
  • Files = zero without pagefile.sys & hyberfil.sys
  • AppData =
  • Desktop =
  • Pictures (library) =
  • Downloads =
  • Public =

Will do when I'm home (currently enjoying the mountain views in Southern France.... wish I'd brought my camera, but I travel light)

Total 32G (or thereabouts)

  • Program Files (x86) = 3.7G
  • Program Files = 3.7G
  • Program Data = 0.6G
  • Windows = 21.5G
  • Other = 1.5G (or thereabouts)
  • Files = zero without pagefile.sys & hyberfil.sys
  • AppData = 0
  • Desktop = 0
  • Pictures (library) = 0
  • Downloads = 0
  • Public = 0

My user directories are on a completely separate drive.

Thanks for the info Andy. I've got my new SSD installation down to 22.4GB - with most programmes (except CS5) installed. All documents, images, data, etc are on another drive. Breakdown is now this in Treesize:

  • Program Files (x86) = 3.8G
  • Program Files = 0.9G
  • Program Data = 1.1G
  • Windows = 15.2G
  • Other = 1.4G (includes Users)
