Hi All,

This is the first thread I have started, so please be nice :)

I just recieved this flickr mail:
Hi Alistair,

I am writing to let you know that one of your photos has
been short-listed for inclusion in the eighth edition of our
Schmap Bristol Guide, to be published at the end of this
month.

[Link removed]

Clicking this link will take you to a page where you can:
i) See which of your photos has been short-listed.
ii) Submit or withdraw your photo from our final selection
phase.
iii) Learn how we credit photos in our Schmap Guides.
iv) Browse online or download the seventh edition of our
Schmap Bristol Guide.

While we offer no payment for publication, many
photographers are pleased to submit their photos, as Schmap
Guides give their work recognition and wide exposure, and
are free of charge to readers. Photos are published at a
maximum width of 150 pixels, are clearly attributed, and
link to high-resolution originals at Flickr.

Our submission deadline is Wednesday, June 17. If you
happen to be reading this message after this date, please
still click on the link above (our Schmap Guides are updated
frequently - photos submitted after this deadline will be
considered for later releases).

Best regards,

Wondering whether or not to let them use my image for free. What do people think?

Cheers

Alistair

While it is a nice ego boost to be asked about using your photo, I think you are mad to let them have it for free. Email tham back and say that you are happy to open negotiations for a fee payment, if you hear nothing back from them, you've lost nothing.

I'd actually be happy with being published.
the money you'd get from the image isn't going to change your life and credit is always nice
then when you build up your portfolio and you do wish to sell your images, you can cite this publication. I think it likely that they will just go another way if you ask for payment, although they could just be fishing.

Are you a professional photographer or are you a hobbyist at present?

Sorry but I can't help feeling you are devaluing yours and other people's work.

At the end of the day if Schmap Guide are making money why shouldn't you? I know it's free for readers but my guess is they are making money from adverts in the guide.

But if you refuse no doubt they will find some other sucker.

Do any pros / hobbyists get paid work that resulted from credits for 'free photos' in an advertising guide? I doubt it.

Many thanks for the replies. I am only a hobbyist- but looking to move into doing photography as my career (very slowly as I have a lot to learn).

Freester- definitely understand where you are coming from here.

Got to weigh it up between getting credit & devaluing my work.

If you were a professional you wouldnt be asking the question. However as a hobbyist and maybe looking to turn pro this could be a nice addition to a portfolio.

My gut feeling is if you ask for a fee they my just reject the image and find another with no charge.

Click the link and who knows what nasties you could pick up

Search the forums for Schmap Guides

It has come up before :)

When I got sent a similar message I replied to their email saying they could use it if they could think of a valid reason they should have it for free considering the people making the Schmap guides are getting paid.

Needless to say I got no reply

I would say no.

They earn money making their dull guide more interesting by using your image.

Do you think anyone will look at your name next to the picture (in tiny text) and think to themselves - "i think i will go look xxx123 up when i get home, i really like this picture"?

No, of course they wont. They will just think - I like these Schmap guides, they have really good pictures to go with the articles - I might buy one for when we go to Bognor Regis....."

Do not devalue your work, or that of others. Your picture is good enough for them to want it - do not give it away free for a credit that is worthless.

This is not aimed at you, but there are so many people starting threads on forums about wanting to go pro one day, yet they are destroying their own future possibilities by creating a market where companies expect images for free or next to nothing. Digital images are so prolific these days that people assume they have no value - "because digital doesnt cost anything right? You dont even have to buy film!"
I am sure that these companies would balk at how much the average high level amateurs gear bag costs, so of course they dont want to buy it and kit out a member of staff with one. They want you to buy the gear and give them the pictures for free.

*and breathe!*

Sorry - got caught up in a bit of a tangent rant there.

In summary -its a nice picture, dont let them have it unless they will pay for it.

If you look at the Schmapp guides you'll see that there are hundreds of photos of each place of interest. It kinda takes away from the excitement of them wanting to publish your photo. At least, it did for me when I looked on there for my photo of the Ponte Vechio in Florence. :)

i got asked aswell, the same time of writing, i let them have mine for free ^^
