Some advice please

Hi guys,

I'm looking at buying some new equipment, I have been using micro 4/3 gear for a while now and I'm looking at switching back to a DSLR. I'm a little out of touch with them after so long away from a canon. The last canon I had was a 400d and that was a fair while back now.

I'm looking at getting either -

A 700d or possibly something like a 7d second hand. Will just be the body.

With the flowing lenses

For urban shots/graffiti/inside buildings - canon 10-22 or sigma 10-20
Portrait - 85mm & most likely a nifty fifty
General use - unsure at the moment.. Possibly a 15-85 3.5/5.6

I was thinking about going full frame as I can get lenses such as the 17-40 and 24-105 at great prices. But, I don't think I really could justify the outlay at the moment on the camera body. Probably something I would look at upgrading too next time.

Am I going along the right lines of thought with my equipment selections here?

My main shots are portrait and urban

Any advice would be great

There is always the option of full frame. But, it would probably have to be with a 5d mk1 body at the moment and I'm unsure if it's not worth me getting such an old model.

The 7d will obviously offer you better access to things without having to go into the menus for everything, but it's a fair size compared to the 700d.

I'm sure I'll decide soon enough :) I have lenses planned out for whatever body I choose.
 
I think you'll find the 'painfully old' 5D's low light/high ISO performance better suited to your urban and indoor photography- though the crop cameras have an integral flash to offset that.
 
What is your priority from a new Canon body - full frame v FPS

The 7D has a very high FPS and def worth a look at if that is what you're after.

Have you thought about a 60D or the new replacement 70D ?
 
Hi,I'm really struggling to decide at the moment. I have used a nikon the past few days and now that has been thrown in to the mix and I'm looking at the 5200 and 7000.

I have been looking at the 7d now a lot more along with a 60d and 70d.

Right now my priority is urban and portrait photography. Realistically my plan is for a cropped sensor and a full frame with some L lenses. Budget would be tight on a full frame body and I couldn't justify a huge outlay, straight off the mark....I have seen 5dmk1 at about £300 that would give me a nice step in to that world and would partner that with the 17-40 24-105 and then upgrade full frame body at a later date, most likely a 5dmk2 or even a 6d...would depend on what's about at the time.

But, now nikon has come in to the mix and I'm struggling on deciding. I have possibly thought about getting a nikon cropped and a canon full frame. I'm fully aware that a nikon full frame is a lot cheaper than a canon full frame aswell.

Models that have taken my eye are the following

Canon - 7d, 70d, 60d... I did also spend a lot of time looking at the 700d as I wanted to spend extra on lenses, but I believe I could get the first 3 at around the same price as a 700d new.

5dmk1 - a cheap and cheerful introduction to ff

Nikon - I started looking at the 3200 and 3300. But have been extensively looking more in to the 5200 and 7000. I have also looked at their ff market which is nicely affordable. But, have not taken much time looking at f mount lenses.

Whatever happens, a cropped sensor body will be my first purchase. The current prices of the 17-40 and 24-105 have also been very attractive to me.

Ahhhhhhh,I will decide. I have 3'weeks and then I'm off,on holiday for 2'and a half weeks :-D.. With new camea.
 
I'd stick with either Canon or Nikon- you don't want to have to buy two sets of lenses.
I'm not that clued up on Nikon's SLRs but I thought the 600 was the cheapest full frame and is about 2.5x the price of a 5D 2nd hand?

If you go the crop route and have no preference between Canon and Nikon- i.e. don't prefer the ergonomics or controls on one, or have any lenses you can beg steal or borrow- then I'd buy a Canon if you're interested in wildlife photography, or Nikon if you're not.
Reasons are that in my opinion Canon offers some very good low-mid price tele's that Nikon hasn't an equivalent of i.e. 300 f4 and 400 f5.6, but Nikon is currently putting out new bodies with better sensors.
 
Personally i shoot canon, but my father in law gets some great wildlife images with Nikon (with a D7100 and the 400m f4) - not that its germane here as ther OP wasnt taking about wildlife

to be honest either range will do everything you want in any feild and the differences are teeny tiny... end of the day it depends on what you prefer and how it feels in the hand.

My advice would be that if you particularly want to do wide angle shots , i wouldn't bother with FF because the FF wide angle lenses are pretty expensive (although the Samyang 14mm offers a budget option)

that aside with canon ( I don't know enough about nikon to give specifics) the xxD and xD models offer a more intuitive interface with more of the important setting on buttons and thumb wheels than the xxxD options - they are also generally better built. If you can afford it i'd say the 7D would be an excellent choice (about 500 second hand of a K new) , if budget is an issue you could look at second user options on either the 60D or the 50D (the latter is great value at a couple of hundred quid for a low activation model)

Lens wise i'd say something like the tamron 17-50 , teamed with a sigma 10-20 (or a tokina 11-16 if you can afford it) will cover most of your urban bases while the former will also be good for portraits .. add an 85mm f1.8* and you are pretty much set - if you want something longer you can either go cheap and cheerful with the canon 55-250 whichis an excllent budget lens, or look for second hand bargains on the sigma 70-200 f2.8 or the canon 70-200 f4

*if you want macro capability you could get a second user tamron 90mm for the same money which will is an excellent macro lens and almost as good for portraits.

yeah right, the integral flash is the first thing a photographer needs to engage whatever the subject :lol:

dSLR-wise I would pick Canon for full frame or Nikon for crop. I don't think 7D (or lesser same-sensor models) would perform as well as say D7000 or D5100. They are still decent and probably a lot better than m43
