First off I am new to this forum and a photography virgin so to speak, I have recently bought a Nikon D3100, 18-55 kit lens and also a Tamron 70-300 with macro 1:2. The question I have for you is this - I am also a bit of a petrolhead and car detailer (like valet but alot more attention to detail) and want to take some great shots of the cars I work on, what would be the most suitable lens for these type of shots? Some would also need to be close ups/macro to show paint defects etc but mostly of the cars while standing still.
Also any tips how to get the best shots would be helpful to me too.

Kind Regards and thanks in advance.

Welcome Scott :)

Your 18-55 should be perfect for general pictures of cars. For the detail stuff, the cheapest and easiest way would be to add a supplementary close-up lens, of say +2 diopters (eg Hoya £20), and use that on the 18-55. I think that would get you close enough for what you're trying to do, but you might want to have a go with the 70-300 first - it has the advantage of giving you a longer working distance for the same magnification.

Hi Hoppy

Thank you for that, very helpful, I bought the 70-300 with this in mind as it was on sale in Jessops and was a bit of a bargain, so I am glad this will work.
The Hoya you mentioned, would this be something that screws into the end of the lens a bit like a filter or am I off on the wrong track?

No, you've got it Scott - some people call them close-up filters. You'd probably need to try a couple first, to make sure you get the right magnification for your needs.

But have a go with the longer zoom first.
