Some Help with buying extender and Filters Please!!

Hii People,

I'm looking at buying a filter for my canon 500d and also i'm looking at buying a tele extender to hopefully help me out a bit with more zoom as the biggest lens i have is a 55-250mm is lens, can anyone recommened any filters or extenders which you have used and maybe so me some pictures with theses if thats possible.

You buy the filter for the lens, not the camera itself.

There are lots of different filters, what do you want it to do? The one you have linked in is a polariser, which is great on wider angled lenses but wouldn't be so useful on your 55-250.

Also you won't be able to use a teleconvertor effectively with the 55-250 and you'll lose AF, they are really designed for f/2.8 telephotos.

well the filter would be used mainly on landscapes and sports like cricket and polo etc so i thought a polarised one would be best but if you can point me towards what you reakon i need that would be fab, yeh i knew bout buyin a filter for the lens not camera thats just my english sorry haha.

well for the extender so that wouldnt really work for me then, its better off spending bit more money and buying a better lens with more zoom would you say.

You don't want to use the polariser for sport as you lose a couple of stops of light. okay thats cool, what filter would you say to use for sport as when i have taken pictures of cricket the sun has been a bit bright for it so that why i was wondering about a filter.

To be honest, you want bright light when shooting sport!

A polariser will work well with those shots you posted, it will bring out the skies and improve colour and contrast. I can recommend Hoya pro1 or Hoya HD polarisers. Amazon are one of the best places to buy from.

is this the hoya pro 1 i know it says it just making sure if thats right and a gd price for it. i couldnt find the hd filter.

Hes talking about cricket on a bright sunny day and everyone wearing white.. Far better looking into exposure compensation than a filter for this..

As for the lens.. You must have been to some small cricket ground Jim if your telling him a 250mm is good enough ? I dont think a teleconverter would ahve helped as it degrades the picture on what isnt the best lens anyway for shooting cricketers so far away.. Need a longer lens for cricket.. no two ways about it.. teleconverter yes on good glass.. but unless your buying L quality then I would go for longer lens

Yes a good, longer, faster telephoto and TC (if required) would definitely be the order of the say for cricket!

yeh thats it haha white and bright light just doesnt go together, most grounds in cornwall arnt huge like the pro stage but there are a fair few like my home ground which is one of the biggest in cornwall. i know 250mm isnt good enough really but as ive only just got in to photography i didnt wont to be spending stupid amounts but i think if i keep up taking pictures throught out the winter ill treat my self to a new lens.

I must admit, I've never shot cricket and you have a point there!

It's terrible on a bright sunny day.. the kits white and usualy the walls if any are white as well.. the sun is high and bright... and people are saying.. "loverly day for taking pictures"... aaargh no its not .

Best time to shoot cricket in summer is from around 4.30 onwards when the sun starts to go down.. makes for really nice pics if you get it behind you

You can set exposure compensation in the camera so that it under or overexposes a given shot. By under exposing a bright scene or in this case, a cricketer wearing White on a sunny day, you are effectively upping the shutter speed by a given amount to reduce the amount of light hitting the sensor.

Exposure compensation can be dialled in as much or little as you need, with the camera then working out the rest in accordance with the amount of compensation you've set.

Does that make sense? I'm sure kipax's explanation will make more sense!

Theres lots of posts on these forums about exposure compensation.. But thats your problem.. the exposure.. you need to change it from what the camera is telling you is a good exposure. Because the camera is wrong.. It depends on what mode your shooting in.. If fully auto then your not going to be able to change anything.

right guys yeh i sort of gettin what you boys are on about, my camera isnt on fully auto i have got it on av as when i first came on here this is what a few people told me to have it on as you can still cahnge a few settings if and when needed.
When it comes to taking pictures i try and take them late on in the afternoon, but the trouble is i'm playing normally in the games i'm trying to get pictures of so i can only take pictures when we are batting inless my gf is there to take pictures whilst i'm on the field.

below i have a picture of our ground that i play at not sure if the size of it shows fully what size it actually is but then underneath i have a few pictures that i have taken from the club house see what you think but i agree a bigger zoom is needed lol

Turn your ISO speed up.. your shutter is too slow.. up the ISO and your shutter speed will be higher. I cant remember ever shooting at iso 100.. my starting point is iso 400

okay that sounds good to me, may i ask how u found what iso i shot those pictures at lol alsoi have the iso on auto and the other settin i have changed not sure what its called as my memory has gone blank but i have got it set to F8.0 if that narrows it down lol
