The story behind these images is in this post in my journey thread. (This thread contains a similar selection of eight images captured the day after with the Olympus 60mm macro on the G80.)

These images were captured hand-held using natural light with a 45-175 lens on a Panasonic G80, some using a Canon 500D close-up lens. The raw files were batch processed in DXO Optics Pro and Silkypix, with image-specific adjustments in Lightroom. There are 1300 pixel high versions in this album at Flickr.

A lovely set Nick. I particularly like the Nigella seed head and the last one (Geranium family?) .

Thanks Pete.

My wife tells me that the geranium is Wallichianum "Buxton's Blue". We had an interesting discussion about the colours, which included going and getting one of the two flowers still on the plant and comparing it to the screen version, and in different light, at different angles, comparing the (very different) colour of the back and front of the petals, discussing the effects of ageing on colours, the effect of seeing it in a green context,..... She thinks there is too much magenta in it. Comparing with the one we brought in showed that it was not as bad as she initially thought, but she still thinks it is a bit off.

Nigella is one of my favourite plants, both the flowers and the seed heads. Because of their symmetry I find them particularly suitable for exploring different angles for the effects that has on the subject and, especially, the backgrounds, along with variations in aperture and framing. Here are some others from the same session.

These are nothing short of sensational Nick! Depth of field, sharpness, lighting all excellent (y)

Thanks Mike.

I'd be interested to know how you think they compare to the eight in this post (same camera, the following day, with Olympus 60mm macro rather than 45-175 and, for some, 500D close-up lens). It isn't strictly like for like, but I'm wondering what your overall impression is. (I'm wondering whether to switch to the 60mm macro as my preferred lens for flowers rather than the 45-175.)

Hmm - well they are both good but I prefer this lot I think - more depth of field and a real 3D quality.

Thanks Mike. That is very interesting indeed. I had read them the other way round and had thought to use the 60mm macro in order to get better results and put up with the not so good (for me) handling characteristics of the 60mm macro. I do very much prefer the handling of the 45-175. Hmmmm..... I shall try using each of them a few times more and do some more comparisons (and put up with having to clean the dust spots off the sensor!).

Actually, talking of spots on sensors, I still haven't got my G80 back yet, so I can't use either the 45-175 or the 60mm macro at the moment. (Well, only on my G3 or G5, and that is beside the point.)

Happy to give another view Nick - really either set of pics are good so I'd go with the setup you prefer.

Feel free to message me if there are others you want compared as I am only on here intermittently these days :)

Thanks Mike, I may do that :) (Once I get my G80 back. :()
