Long story, but I was gifted a Pentax P30 with a selection of lenses. And it got me thinking about an upcoming trip to New York.

Should I take a film camera alongside my digital?

Anyway, to that end, I sought advice in the equipment section, bought some film and went out really just to test the camera and lenses, with a view to taking the camera and the 35-70 lens. Unfortunately that lens turned out to be a dud. But the 50mm was clean.

Then I got carried away with myself, and dug out my own film camera - a Minolta x-500. Ordered some new/different lenses for it and went out to test those too.

Most of the shots were proper tests and not creative, but towards the end of the rolls, I started getting used to the cameras again.

All shot on XP2 and processed by FilmDev.

Those are cracking photos. I wish I could take ones as good as that. It's always been a bit of a mystery to me how people manage to take film shots at night.

Excellent work, you've recaptured your film mojo there methinks!

Great stuff!

Love the modern nighthawks one

Given that I had two rolls of film and got 6-10 usable shots out of 72... I think these might have been luck more than judgement.

keep snapping with FILM !

I think a success rate of about 10% for film in extreme conditions, given the excellent examples, is very, very good.

Some more from another batch of film I've just got back.

In fairness all of these were hand-held.

As I was practicing, I wasn’t ready to commit to a tripod really.

I tend to use ‘street-tripods’ as I call them.

Lean up against a lamppost or jam the camera up against it to keep it static.

Also use the timer so the camera doesn’t jolt when you push the shutter.
