I currently own a Canon 40D and a G9 and I am often torn with which to take out with me.

So I am looking for something in-between I know there out there. They look like a P&S but you can change the lenses. Trouble is I have no idea what there called or what their like.

Any thoughts? Any suggestions? Do you have one what's it like?

You mean like a Sony Nex / Olympus PEN / Samsung NX / Panasonic G?

You need to look for cameras with interchangeable lenses - they're sometimes called EVIL (Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lenses) or Compact System cameras.

They vary in size - some are pretty tiny with a pancake lens attached, but once you add a zoom lens, they start getting close to a small DSLR.
 
Many people have them, hunt out the Panasonic G owners thread, plenty of wide ranging sample images in there of allsorts. The most compact ones would be the Panasonic GF1 or 2, or the Olympus Pens. Between the 2 I'd have a Pen, but neither really match Panasonic's GH line for quality. These are the ones that are basically very small DSLRs, and are my preferred cameras.
 
GF1 is a cracking camera but i prefer the Olympus E-PL2. I also have a NEX 5 which has a APS-C sized sensor so bigger/better than micro 4/3 (Olympus/Panasonic) but kit lenses are not great.

GF1 or Oly E-PL2 with Panasonic 20mm f1.7 lens....Superb!
 
Also take a look at the Fuji X100 thats recently come out, might be something you are interested in.
 
Thanks for the info guys, Looks like i will need to sell the 40d and lens before I invest so there might be some bargains to be had :)
 
There are often micro four thirds cameras and lenses in the for sale section here. Might be worth a look...???
 
Ok as another point of interest can anyone think of a P&S that will shoot both wide angle
and telephoto and that shoots in Raw?

If its out there I cant find it.
 
I have a gf1 with 14 - 45mm lens that takes great shots, but I hardly ever take it out!

I know my d700 is heavy and big, but I am always afraid that when I get a chance to take "that" shot, I will need the D700 to get it.


The gf1 generally sits in the boot of the car, just in case, but every time I go out to take shots it's the nikon that comes out.
 
Yeah I know what you mean but after lugging my SLR around Thailand to mostly take holiday snaps I am thinking I need something more portable.
 
Another vote for the GF1 with a 20mm lens here. Great IQ, easy to use and fits easily into a jacket pocket. The only downside i find with mine is a lack of built in viewfinder.
 
I was in a similar position with a Canon DSLR and a G9 and looking for something smallish that could handle low light and deliver good image quality. I've been through a few EVIL cameras (Olympus, Panasonic and Sony) and have settled on the Panasonic GF1 with 200 f1.7 lens. The only negative I've found is that it is such a good camera in such a small package that my G9 doesn't get a look in anymore.
 
Well I am still not sure took the G9 out at the weekend and I have to say it performed well and the zoom range was not an issue.
Might keep it for now and see how things go.

Saw an advert for one of these the other day - looks very interesting having an APS-C sensor and veiwfinder built in. I think it'd make a nice compact alternative to an SLR, only problem is its quite expensive
