Hi,

Having just got a Sony A700 with 16-105mm lens i am looking to buy a lens for much longer reach.

I have been thinking of getting the Sony 70-300G for about £500. Does anybody have any experience of this lens? if so is it as good as they say or would i be better going for a bigma or 120-400 sigma or similar?

Cheers

Matt

the 70-300mm was named the best consumer telephoto and it certainly is from most photographers POV, however it should be at least £100 cheaper because the canon and nikon offerings arent even £500 and they have VR built in, which is quite expensive to import.

but the Sony is better than the Canon optically, at least as good as the Nikon & imo better built but unfortunately built in far smaller nos. than either so doesn't benefit from the same volume of scale manufacturing savings ...
& Sony didn't charge you for the SSS built into your body.
it's all swings & roundabouts.

Hi,

I asked the same question for my father-in-law http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=188206 and got some very helpfull threads posted - thanks again.

He couldn't afford to go much more expensive than this, so ruled out some of the other lenses available, but he has now decided to buy the lens and in his very early stages of using it (only bought it a couple of days ago) he is very pleased with it, focuses much faster (and quieter) than his older 70-300 lens and seems to be sharper, but is definately giving better photos. As I said, it's very early days presently, so hopefully, with time, things should improve more.

My only main concern was the price - as has been raised above and on my thread, but Jessops were selling it cheaper than anyone else and yes, I suspect the price will drop slightly over time, but, how long do you wait ????

Good luck with your search, if you do decide to get ths lens, I don't think you'd be disappointed.
